Purpose Primary Goal: To offer youth economic opportunity and job skill development, providing a pathway to future employability Other Benefits: To introduce high school and college students to careers in local government To provide opportunities for students to experience how local government works To offer a valuable educational experience for the intern, the supervisor and the city Slide 2
Program Highlights Ten week program Interns perform meaningful work and participate in career/life skill workshops High school: Job readiness, career exploration, financial literacy, business and community leaders College: Attendance at EMT, City Council, appropriate Boards and Commissions Presentation Slide 3
Program Eligibility High School (20 participants) Rising 11 th or 12 th grade students - 4 per High School, with 4 slots remaining for applicants from Bridgeport, home-school and/or private school Minimum 2. 7 grade point average At least 16 years old at the commencement of the internship Priority given to students qualified for the federal free/reduced lunch program Slide 4
Program Eligibility College (4 participants) 2 slots allocated per educational institution Completion of second year at Hampton University or first year at Thomas Nelson Community College Minimum 3. 0 grade point average Slide 5
Application Process High School Essay of 200 words or less expressing interest in the program Letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor Screening conducted by Human Resources in concert with the High School Guidance counselors for each High School Placement coordinated with participating departments Candidates referred to participating departments Slide 6
Application Process College Essay of 500 words or less expressing interest in the program Letter of recommendation from a professor Initial Screening conducted by Human Resources Interview with committee of Department Heads and City Manager’s Office Slide 7
Funding $60, 000 20 high school interns/4 college interns Program materials, including bus passes for transportation needs of students Recommended source of funding: Safe & Clean/Youth Violence & Crime Prevention funds set aside from ATF proceeds Proof of concept funding – evaluation of program will determine whether this is a viable strategy for achieving goals, and if so, expansion will be recommended and permanent funding budgeted Slide 8
