What is physics, and … • Physics is the study of nature, but physics 1 will focus on: • Motion (Velocity, Acceleration, etc) • Forces, momentum, energy, power • Rotational motion, torque • Waves, periodic motion, springs • Maybe a little E&M, Optics, Thermo

and… is it hard? • It really depends on YOU! • But, not if you: – Learn the concepts rather than relying on a formula – Practice – Read, listen, take notes – Practice – Learn the material at first because it will be used all year long!

and… is it hard? • It’s not hard if you: – Know how to transpose equations, solve simultaneous equations, quadratic equations, and how to graph – Know SOH CAH TOA and the Pythagorean Theorem – Know how to correctly use your calculator!! This includes the “EE” key, graphing, trig in degree and radian modes

and… is it hard? • It’s not hard if you: – – Practice!! Learn and use the correct units!! Use dimensional analysis Follow a process EVERY time! In other words, use a very systematic approach similar to stoichiometry in chem.

- But I’m still scared of the math df = di + ½ at 2 : On paper, solve for t df = di +vit + ½ at 2 : On paper, solve for t (hint negative b plus or minus the square root of…) If you are traveling at an average of 10 m/s, how many minutes will it take to go 60 km? Use dimensional analysis

- But I’m still scared of the math When solving for a particular unknown, ask yourself: i) what am I looking for? (t in our case) ii) What is being done to it (to t)? iii) How do I “Undo” those things? iv) start at the bottom of PEMDAS v) whatever you do to one side (NOT just one term), you must do to the other

- But I’m still scared of the math df = di + ½ at 2 : Which is a correct first step? df /(½ a)= di + t 2 df - di = ½ at 2

- But I’m still scared of the math

- But I’m still scared of the math If you are traveling at an average of 10 m/s, how many minutes will it take to go 60 km? Use dimensional analysis What was your “given” (single unit), and what were your conversion factors (two or more units)? Remember: king henry Died (by) drinking chocolate milk If pizza is $2. 00/slice and you buy 6 slices for you and your friends, how much did you spend? Show the dimensional analysis.

- But I’m still scared of the math Using your calculator, find the correct answer without using parenthesis and only using the enter key once: 1. 8 x 1022 atoms 1 mol CO 1 mol C 3 H 8 6. 02 x 1023 atoms 3 mol CO

- But I’m still scared of the math a) b) c) d) 9. 0 x 1044 mol 1. 0 x 1043 mol 0. 010 mol 0. 090 mol 1. 8 x 1022 atoms 1 mol CO 1 mol C 3 H 8 6. 02 x 1023 atoms 3 mol CO

- But I’m still scared of the math 1. 8 E 22 / 6. 02 E 23 / 3 1. 8 E 22 / 18 E 24 1. 8 / 18 E 2 (1. 8 / 18 = 0. 1) 0. 1 / 100 =. 0010 1. 8 x 1022 atoms 1 mol CO 1 mol C 3 H 8 6. 02 x 1023 atoms 3 mol CO

- But I’m still scared of the math If the correct answer to a question is 5. 0, which of the following is closer? a) 0. 000000000005 b) 5, 000, 000 c) 8. 0 Moral of the story, the “E” part is MUCH more important than the “number” part! And always do a reality check!!

- But I’m still scared of the math If you need 5 vans to transport students, which is closer to correct? a) b) c) d) 5 5 cookies 5 milli vans (if there was such a unit) 4 vans Moral of the story, the unit(s) is are MUCH more important than the “number” part!

How many equations? • There are only 4 kinematics equations • We also use SOH CAH TOA • And the definitions of avg (initial + final)/2 and Delta or change (final – initial)

king henry Died? G _ _ M _ _ k h D base d c m _ _ n There a lot of little things in a big thing! To convert metric prefixes, put your pencil on the original prefix and count the number of places to the desired prefix. Move the decimal that many places and in that direction.

king henry Died? G _ _ M _ _ k h D base d c m _ _ n 5, 400 Mg is how many mg? move 9 places to the right: 5, 400, 000, 000 mg 0. 00000500 nm is how many km? Move the decimal 12 places left: 5. 00 x 10 -18 km

Scalars and Vectors Know these really, REALLY well!! Always take your nose spray!!

Scalars and Vectors Know these really, REALLY well!! This is the cause for a significant portion of student difficulties! Scalar: Has magnitude (number part) only. Vector: Has both magnitude AND DIRECTION

Scalars and Vectors

Scalars and Vectors What can we say about the direction? Draw this and answer the question on your paper.

Scalars and Vectors a) b) c) d) 30 degrees west of north 30 degrees north of west 60 degree elevation angle 30 degrees counterclockwise from the y axis e) all of the above

Scalars and Vectors a) b) c) d) 30 degrees west of north 30 degrees north of west 60 degree elevation angle 30 degrees counterclockwise from the y axis e) all of the above Since we do NOT know what the y axis represents, the only claim we can make is d

Vector Direction and Bearings (yes, confusing) Now we do know that the y axis represents north, so we can say this plane is heading 30 degrees east of north. We cannot say it is 30 degrees north of east as shown below!

Vector Direction and Bearings (yes, confusing) In math, you have learned the convention of “standard position”

Vector Direction and Bearings (yes, confusing) Navigation uses 0 degrees = north Positive angle = Clockwise

Vector Direction and Bearings (yes, confusing) Many correct ways (and even more incorrect ways): 1) 30 degrees east of north 2) 60 degrees north of east 3) N 30 o E 4) Heading of 30 o 5) 60 o from standard position

Vectors: not really new

Vectors: not really new Just be careful – the hypotenuse is on the side by itself!! b 2 = c 2 – a 2 = c 2 – b 2 Notice the minus sign!!

Vectors: finding components Finding the components is the same as finding the legs of a right triangle. Find the opposite and adjacent sides using SOH CAH TOA ON YOUR PAPER: If you walked 2 miles 30 o east of north, find how far north you walked and how far east you walked. Hint: Draw it first and be careful where you put the angle.

Vectors: finding the magnitude and direction If you know the components, use SOH CAH TOA and the Pytagorgean Thm to find the vector. ON YOUR PAPER: If you walked 2 miles east then 3 miles north, find how far you are from where you started and the direction using both east of north and north of east. http: //www. physicsclassroom. com/getattachment/curricul um/vectors/vect. pdf

Vectors: finding the magnitude and direction ON YOUR PAPER: add A to E, what is the resultant? Add A + E + C. Does it matter if you add C + A + E instead? Add B + D. Notice they are at the same angle above the X-axis (same reference angle of 45 degrees)

Vectors: finding the magnitude and direction ON YOUR PAPER: Show the vector addition equations. Which one is the resultant?

Vectors: North is in the positive Y direction ON YOUR PAPER: a) Find the components of the vectors. b) add like terms (north/south and east/west) c) Find the resultant d) If you really liked pre-calc, you may use the Law of Cosines to confirm your answer. How else could they have written the direction of these vectors.
