Summer Math Curse By: Hailey Xu
Problem 1: Hailey and her sister are packing boxes to move to their new house. In total, there are 40 boxes. When Hailey and her sister finish packing, Hailey’s mom says that Hailey packed 1/10 of the boxes and her sister packed 1/8 of the boxes. How many boxes were not packed by Hailey and her sister?
Problem 2: Hailey’s family has to drive from their old house to their new house. If their car is going 45 miles per hour for the whole trip and it take 30 minutes to get there, how many miles does it take to drive from their old house to their new house? Express your answer in decimal form.
Problem 3: Hailey’s family is now exploring a new grocery store in the area. They bought some items and the purchase cost was $64. 28. The cashier asked them if they wanted to round up their purchase to the next whole number and donate the extra money to the Johns Hopkins hospital. They said yes. How much did Hailey’s family donate to the hospital?
Answer Key Problem 1: First, you have to see what fraction of the total amount of boxes that Hailey and her sister packed altogether. So, you have to add 1/10 + 1/8. Since the fractions have different denominators, you have to find the least common multiple which is 40. Therefore the equation is 4/40 + 5/40 = 9/40. So, they used 9/40 of the total. The boxes they packed is 40 x 9/40 = 360/40=9. The boxes they didn’t do is 40 -9=31
Answer Key Problem 2: If you travel for 1 hour, you will go 45 miles. So, if you travel for 30 minutes which is ½ an hour, you will go ½ of 45 miles which is 45 ÷ 2 =22. 5 in decimal form.
Answer Key Problem 3 The nearest whole when rounding up is $65. 00. The amount of money that they donated is $65. 00 - $64. 28 = $0. 72. So, they donated 72¢ to the hospital.
