Summer Math Curse By Cayden Tran
Problem one On the first week of Summer my family decided to watch a movie. When we made it to theater, we were going to buy some popcorn. I looked up at the menu and I saw that there was a lot of items on the menu. The menu had 5 different items: ● ● ● The regular popcorn is $8. 64 The regular drink is $3. 58 The slushie is $4. 74 The candy combo is $7. 96 A hotdog is $9. 75 If my family wanted to buy 3 popcorns, 3 drinks, 2 slushies, 1 candy combo, and 2 hotdogs, how much money did we spend on food at the movies theater?
Problem Two I traveled to Myrtle Beach this Summer. It was very fun. One of my favorite activities is to pick up seashells. I picked up 3 different sizes of seashells, small, medium, and large. A small seashell is 4/16 of an inch. A medium shell is 4/8 of 1 inch. And last, a large seashell is 4/5 of an inch. So if i had 3 small shells, 2 medium shells, and 2 large shells, how many inches would it be if I lined all of my shells up?
Problem three I really wanted to read lots of books this Summer. My goal was 50 books. I visited the library many times to check out different books. My library has 1, 212 books in it. The library’s kids section is ⅓ of the library and I only read from the kids section. Every week I visited the library 2 times a week and there about 3 months in the summer (about 4 weeks in each month). If I checked out 2 books every time I visit the library did I reach my reading goal our did I fall short? And how many books do I still need to read in the kid’s section?
Answer Key Question 1: I figured this question by adding all the food items. This question falls under the decimal category. The answer was $73. 60. Question 2: I added all the seashell sizes up. This question falls under the fraction category. The answer was 3 inches and 23/40 (anything equivalent to that too) Question 3: first, I counted up how many books i check out in a week. I got 4. Then I counted how many weeks are in the Summer break and got twelve. So I did 4 times 12 is 48. So the first question is no, I fell short. The second question is simple. I found out the total books that I read, and found how many books were in the kid’s section. I got 404 books in the kid’s section. So since I read 48 books over the Summer, 404 -48=356.
