Goals of GCW Regional Workshops • Identify challenges related to changes in the cryosphere; • Examine current activities on monitoring the cryosphere and explore opportunities for improved monitoring, expand Cryo. Net; • Discuss data exchange and services; • Identify opportunities for further collaboration; • Establish a regional GCW group and include the expertise of its members into GCW.

First Cryo. Net Asia Workshop Beijing, China, December 2013 The First GCW Cryo. Net Asia was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) at China Meteorology Administration (CMA) in Beijing, China 3 -5 December 2013. § 17 International experts from 14 countries § 7 Experts from CMA § 23 Experts from CAS Participants were from China, Pakistan, India, Japan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, USA, Canada, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland.

First Cryo. Net Asia Workshop: Outcomes • Reviewed existing observation sites/observatories over the “Third Pole” region. • Achievements and gaps in observations were identified. • Defined the boundary of Asia Cryo. Net not limited to Third Pole only, but whole Asia except Arctic. • Set up guidelines for how Asia Cryo. Net is being organized. • For some stations/sites, focal points were listed. • Pursue continuous support and upgrade observations in Third Pole region towards GCW standard.

Second Asia Cryo. Net Workshop Salekhard, Russia, February 2016 The workshop was held at the Administration of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (Ya. NAO). The workshop was organized by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) of Roshydromet and Ya. NAO.

Second Asia Cryo. Net Workshop There were 38 workshop participants, including scientists from 10 Members of WMO Regional Association II (RA-II) and some GCW experts from other Regions.

Outcomes of the Second Asia Workshop • Cryosphere observational activities in Asia were reviewed.

Outcomes of the Second Asia Workshop • Cryosphere observational activities in Asia were reviewed. • An inventory of measurement methods and standards used in the region was compiled. • New instrument • More than 20 sites in the "Third Pole" (Himalaya) region and Siberia were proposed as new Cryo. Net sites. • The formation of a more formal Asia regional (GCW) group was proposed. It will include representatives for the Arctic, sub-Arctic, High Mountain/Tibet/Pamir, and High Mountain/Himalaya. • Terms of Reference for the Asia GCW group were drafted. • Members were nominated.

Tropical Cryosphere Workshop Arusha, Tanzania, 4 -6 July, 2017 WMO redefined in 2017 the scope of its high mountain activities: “mountain areas where seasonal or perennial cryosphere is present and poses potential and serious risks to society, related to water security and disaster resilience”. Participation: • Bolivia • Colombia (remote) • Ecuador • Peru • Morocco • Kenya • Dem Rep of Congo • Tanzania • Indonesia

Tropical Regions Cryosphere: Next Steps • • Best Practices: under development, to involve experts present for review and input Data exchange: – WMO to promote the exchange of SWE data, operationally. – GCW to facilitate the gaining access to data from research projects, where this is available for the Met Services and other national organizations. – To provide input to the WMO’s Polar Satellite Task Group on the development of a “high mountain” focus, to address observations and product needs in these regions; Facilitate access to available satellite data, by region and applications. Africa: explore the potential for expanding observing networks to include glaciers, snow, frozen ground. Building linkages with; – International Centre for the Investigation of El Nino (CIIFEN) – African Regional Climate Centre; – Increased utilization of hydrological data and models; – Promote the engagement of meteorological and hydrological agencies in the same country. GCW to link to organizations with active projects in these regions to explore the continuation of support and collaboration, including seeking funding opportunities. Facilitate discussions within the WMO community on capacity building at national level: observations, research, infrastructure, development of young scientists;

GCW Tropical Cryosphere: proposals for new stations for the GCW observing network • Africa:

GCW Tropical Cryosphere: proposals for new stations for the GCW observing network • Africa: Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, GOMA station (Dem Rep of Congo) • Peru: considerations given for: – Quisoquipina, Coropuna and Huaytapallana weather stations as contributing stations – Cryonet site in the Vilcanota range with Quelcaya and Quisoquipina. • Bolivia and Ecuador: reconfirming support for the existing stations.
