Code RED – Fire ACTIONS: REMOVE yourself and others from immediate danger. n ALERT others: - Push Break Glass Alarm or Manual Call Point; - Dial *33 (to notify switchboard/reception of exact fire location); - State name and position. - Indicate nature of emergency n CONTAIN / isolate fire by closing doors and windows. n EXTINGUISH fire by using fire fighting equipment if safe to do so. DO NOT TAKE RISKS. If the number of persons available will allow, initiate above actions simultaneously. n STAND DOWN (when directed by Country Fire Authority). n
Code ORANGE - Evacuation ACTIONS: Under direction of Emergency Officer, evacuate as directed. - Prioritise Evacuees: - Escort ambulant patients; - Assist semi-ambulant patients; - Evacuate non-ambulant patients. n Emergency Officer or their representative will: - record names of evacuees at emergency assembly area(s); - No unauthorised person to return to evacuated area. n Emergency response team to: - check all rooms, toilets, etc; - Place ‘evacuated’ sticker on doors when rooms have been checked; - Leave lighting on and close doors and windows if safe to do so. n n Stand down (When directed by controlling authority: eg. CFA or Vic
Code BLUE – Medical Alert (No signs of life) ACTIONS: Activate Hospital Alarm System: - Dial *33 (to notify switchboard / reception of exact location of emergency). n n Alert Staff in proximity. n Position patient for resuscitation – commence Basic Life Support. n Appropriate personnel respond to area. n Senior medical officer present assumes control. n Resuscitation trolley to be taken to area (where appropriate). n Maintain a record of events, drugs and treatment given.
Code PURPLE – Bomb/Arson ACTIONS: n Threat Basic Rules: Treat all events as genuine, record exact information. If by telephone: - Do not hang up telephone, keep the person talking, record as much info as possible; - Whilst maintaining call, notify nearest staff member by note, to initiate action. n Activate Hospital Alarm system: - Dial *33 to notify switchboard. n n Notify staff in proximity. Follow instructions of Emergency Officer, which may include : - Prepare to evacuate; - Open all doors and windows. n If object found: - Do not touch, report find, isolate area, prevent access to area. n n Stand down ( when directed by Vic Police or Emergency Controller).
Code BLACK – Armed Threat A Code Black (Armed Threat) may be: (i) Confrontation with an armed person; (ii) An armed hold-up. ACTIONS: n Follow directions of armed persons at all times. n Remove yourself away from danger if possible. n Immediately following incident, activate hospital alarm system by: - Dialling *33 to notify switchboard / reception of exact location of emergency. n Follow instructions of the emergency officer which may include: - Description of facts observed; - Cordon off area where intruder touched articles. n Complete a Code Black Checklist and report form. n Stand down (when directed by Vic Police or Emergency Controller).
Code GREY – Violence Emergency Code Grey signifies an unarmed threat where any person displays behaviour including but not limited to: - Verbal abuse or physical aggression; Threatening suicide; Threatening to injure self or others; Intimidation or inappropriate behaviour. ACTIONS: Activate Hospital Alarm System: - Press Duress Alarm button if available or; - Dial *33 (to notify switchboard / reception of exact location of emergency). n n Notify Staff in proximity. n Do not approach the person unnecessarily. n Follow instructions of the emergency officer. n Stand down (when directed by Emergency Controller).
Code YELLOW – Internal Emergency – For example: failure of vital systems such as power, water, telecommunications, leakage of gases, flooding, storm damage, exposure to chemical, biological or radiological substances. ACTIONS: n Activate Hospital Alarm System: - Dial *33 to notify switchboard. n Alert Staff in proximity. n Follow instructions of emergency officer. n Stand down (when directed by Emergency Controller).
Code BROWN – External Emergency – For example: An external event where multiple casualties may exist. The hospital may expect casualties to arrive at the hospital and/or medical staff may need to go to the external site. n ACTIONS: n If notified by phone: - Record relevant info: name of caller, location and type of emergency, numbers of casualties, etc. n Activate hospital alarm system: - Dial *33 to notify switchboard. Provide as many relevant details as possible to allow verification and dissemination of information. n Staff to remain in their own area and await further instructions (on standby). n Stand down (when directed by Emergency Controller).
STAND DOWN n When emergency is over, the switchboard operator or Emergency Controller will announce ‘Stand down’. n Eg. “Attention all staff, Code Red, Stand Down” (repeated 2 times) n Staff to return to normal duties or as instructed by emergency officer.
