PURPOSE Suicide is the number 2 leading cause of death for young adults ages 18 -24. This one week unit will provide students with an understanding of how suicide affects the lives of the people around them and also how it affects them. It will also teach them how to help others who are suicidal.
OBJECTIVES: WHAT WILL THESE ADOLESCENTS LEARN DURING THESE LESSONS? • Students will be able to identify positive qualities and characteristics within themselves to promote positive self-esteem. • Students will be able to assess themselves and others during crisis modes to prevent suicide. • Students will be able to find the cause and effect of different triggers and how they relate to suicide. • Students will be able to use the concepts learned in this lesson to solve non-routine problems like sporadic depression and suicidal ideations. • Students will be able to analyze possible situations and be prepared to stop them before they even happen.
UNIT OUTLINE Day One: Introduce suicide definition and statistics. This will be the day for breaking the silence, discussing different myths about suicide, and learning ways to debunk the myths. Students will be given a pre-assessment to see what they know and how they feel, and they will be given their introductory poem to the course, “The Morning After I Killed Myself. ”
DAY 2 -3 Students will be learning about the Warning Signs of Suicide and how to deal with them. They will be learning the triggers of suicide and how to cope with them. They will use 3 worksheet to do this: including a crossword puzzle, a coping worksheet, and they will assess a story and the appropriate responses.
DAY 4 We will discuss the importance of bullying and what to do when it occurs. How is Bullying linked drastically to suicide and school dropout rates? Students will create a short play on bullying and it’s effects and each of the other students will have to come up with at least three ways to fix the situation, including one resource that they could access in that situation.
DAY 5 Final Project: Students will do the final project in their initial groups. Within each group they will come up with a total of 2 -3 quiz questions based on the things that we learned in this unit. Afterwards the class will get together as a group and decide what questions should go into the final assessment. Once the questions are picked the class will popcorn the answers, one question and answer person. Each person will have a choice to use a lifeline if they do not know the answer, and their lifeline can only be someone from their initial groups.
