What is Suicide? • The act of intentionally taking ones own life. Certain risk factors increase thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts: Alienation- feeling isolated and separated from everyone else. Ø Lack of support from family and friends Ø Unable to access resources for help Ø Recognizing the signs of suicide may help to prevent it!
Warning Signs of Suicide • • • Recent suicide in family/ friends Trouble coping with losses, death, divorce, moving, break ups Experience traumatic events Making final arrangements, writing will or eulogy Give away possessions Sudden change in attitude, appearance, drug or alcohol use
Verbal Signs of Suicide “I can’t go on anymore” “I wish I was never born” “I wish I were dead” “I won’t need this anymore” “Everyone would be better off if I was dead”

Getting Help Asking for help is a sign of strength Treatment Methods • Behavior therapy- treatment process that focuses change on unwanted behaviors. • Family therapy- focuses on helping the family function in more positive and constructive ways. • Group therapy- involves treating a group of people who have similar problems and who meet regularly with a trained counselor. • Drug therapy- the use of certain medications to treat ro reduce the symptoms of a mental disorder In School Health Professionals • A Counselor • School Psychologist • School Social Worker
