Diminutives – when do I use them ? Diminutives are so important in the Spanish language and used with so much frequency. They may even sound silly to us. • To say something is small (dog – doggie or little dog) • To show endearment to things or people (blanket – blanky / grandmother - granny)
Diminutives – how do I use them ? Only do this to NOUNS. 1. If the noun ends in an a o an o change the ending to ito or ita based on the gender. Ex: la mesa – la mesita / el libro – el librito 2. General rule: if it ends in any other letter add cito or cita to the ending based on the gender. Ex: el bebé – el bebecito / la canción – la cancioncita 3. Remember to add an s if it is plural (Ex: los perros – los perritos) 4. Note that some will require spelling changes to keep the sound. Ex: la chica – la chiquita / el lago – el laguito
So it may look something like this: For breakfast my mama asks me: “Hija, quieres un huevo con tocino y un café con leche? ” Meanwhile, my abuelita asks me: “Hijita, quieres un huevito con tocinito y un cafecito con lechita? ” I love my abuelita.
Also: When I am sick my mother asks me: ¿Quieres una sopita? My love I like to call: Mi corazoncito.

Augmentatives – when do I use them ? Here we will use the suffixes ísimo/ísima/ísimos/ísimas: • To say something is big/really something
How? • Drop the ending and add ísimo(a)(os)(as) – fácil. • Ex: interesante – interesantísimo (really interesting) • Ex: bello – bellísimo (really beautiful) • Ex: gordo - gordísimo (really fat) • Ex: delicioso - deliciosísimo (really delicious)
You can only do this to adjectives!!!
