Reference: Island West Transfer Station Open Date Since May 1997 Service Area Western and Central Districts of Hong Kong Island Capacity 1, 000 tons of waste per day Highlights The facility is built partly within a man-made cavern, thus confining its environmental impacts, potential noise and odor emissions that could emit to the urban area. The transfer operation is carried out in the dual level cavern system. Waste is unloaded into pits equipped with ‘moving floors' and compacted into containers. It is then shipped by sea every day on purposebuilt vessels to WENT landfill in the New Territories. Reference: HK Organic Waste Treatment Facility Contract Type Construction and 15 -year operation since 2017 Application Food waste in Hong Kong Capacity 200 tons per day Highlights Through biological treatment processes like anaerobic digestion and composting, the food waste will be turned into biogas and compost. 7, 300 tons of compost is generated per year, that can be used as fertilizer for farming purpose. The biogas produced by the facility will be used as renewable energy. Around 14 million KWh of surplus electricity will be injected into the electrical grid. By replacing fossil fuel electricity production in this way, this green energy will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25, 000 tons per year. Reference: North East New Territories Landfill (NENT) Type of Contract O&M of the landfill and 30 -year aftercare Application municipal solid waste, construction and demolition waste and special waste including sewage sludge and animal waste Capacity 35 million m 3 , receive waste over 1 million tons per year Highlights Professional management to guarantee the safety of the landfill and no impact on the environment. The company has 30 -year long aftercare responsibility for the landfill upon completion of waste filing. Biogas extracted from the landfill is used to produce electrical power for use on site, as well as to provide energy for an ammonia stripper which is part of the Leachate Treatment Works which deals with up to 350, 000 m 3 of leachate each year. The landfill gas is converted to synthetic natural gas in a treatment unit on site. The SNG is then piped 19 km to provide thermal energy to assist in the manufacture of Towngas. As a result, it is expected that the annual consumption of naphtha/LNG used in Towngas production will be reduced by up to 43, 000 tons per year and emissions of carbon dioxide will be reduced by 135, 000 tons per year. 23 I SUEZ NWS' waste business
