How Much Do You Know? ? ? Icebreaker: SIDS Myths or Truths about

How Much Do You Know? ? ? Icebreaker: SIDS Myths or Truths about Babies can "catch" SIDS. Cribs cause "crib death" or SIDS Babies who sleep on their backs will choke if they spit up or vomit during sleep. Together we can STOP SIDS!!! SIDS can occur in babies at any age. If parents sleep with their babies in the same bed, they will hear any problems and be able to prevent them from happening.

What is SUIDS v Sudden unexplained infant death syndrome (suids) happens when a child

What is SUIDS v Sudden unexplained infant death syndrome (suids) happens when a child passes away from unexplainable causes from the ages of 1 to 12 months. Even though the deaths are unexplained most are surrounded by children sleeping in unsafe environments v. There are 3 different types of Sudden unexplained infant death syndrome. -SIDS -Unknown Causes -Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed

What is SUIDS continued…. Unknown causes is another type of sudden unexplained infant death

What is SUIDS continued…. Unknown causes is another type of sudden unexplained infant death syndrome (SUIDS) and is the sudden death of an infant less than 1 years of age that cannot be explained because a thorough investigation was not conducted and cause of death could not be determined.

What is SUIDS continued…. The second type of SUIDS is: Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation

What is SUIDS continued…. The second type of SUIDS is: Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed (ASSB) Ways in which infants are suffocated or strangulation: Suffocation by soft bedding Overlay: when an adult rolls on or against a child. Wedging or entrapment: Stuck between two objects Strangulation: ex infants head trapped

What is SUID continued…… The last type of Sudden unexplained infant death syndrome SUIDS

What is SUID continued…… The last type of Sudden unexplained infant death syndrome SUIDS is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS. SIDS is defined as the sudden death of an infant less than 1 year of age that cannot be explained after a thorough investigation It is the most common term known when it comes to types of sudden unexplained infant death syndrome SUIDS Each year, about 4, 000 infants die unexpectedly during sleep time, from SIDS, accidental suffocation, or unknown SIDS is the number one killer of infants 1 to 12 months Most SIDS deaths happen when babies are between 1 month and 4 months of age A proper investigation has to be done in order for a baby to be considered SIDs. An full investigation includes: An examination of the death scene. An autopsy (medical examination of the body after death). A review of the infant’s medical history

WHO IS AFFECTED BY SUIDS? SUIDS can affect any infant 1 years old

WHO IS AFFECTED BY SUIDS? SUIDS can affect any infant 1 years old or younger regardless of social class, religion, or race, but…. . Native Americans are #1 in the US to be affected by SUIDs and African Americans are second. Many assumptions of why this is including: lack of education and traditional practices

How Can We STOP SUIDS!!! We sadly can NOT stop SUIDS from happening, but

How Can We STOP SUIDS!!! We sadly can NOT stop SUIDS from happening, but we can reduce the chances. Things we can do to reduce SUIDS: v. Immunizations: Even though you cant catch SUIDS shots keep infants from getting sick which reduces death v. Medicine: If a infant is sick it is best practice to take them to the doctor and receive treatment. v. Be aware: Watch infants and the things that surround them that may cause them harm.

WHAT is SAFE SLEEP? Question: How do you lay an infant down to sleep?

WHAT is SAFE SLEEP? Question: How do you lay an infant down to sleep? Why? Safe to Sleep once called back to sleep has been decided by researchers to be the best way to put an infant to sleep is on his/her back. Youtube video: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Rs 9 J w 3 u. Ioa. U

Why is Safe to Sleep important? Laying an infant to sleep on their

Why is Safe to Sleep important? Laying an infant to sleep on their stomach has be found to increase SIDS risk between 1. 7 -12. 9 times. Studies have suggested that stomach to sleep could causes SIDS because it may: 1. Increase the probability that the baby re-breathes his or her own exhaled breath, leading to carbon dioxide buildup and low oxygen levels 2. Causes upper airway obstruction 3. Interfering with body heat dissipation, leading to overheating 2. Quick Demonstration: Ask class to place chin to chest and swallow, then tilt head back and swallow.

Why is Safe to Sleep important? Babies might actually clear such fluids better when

Why is Safe to Sleep important? Babies might actually clear such fluids better when on their backs because of the location of the windpipe (trachea) and keep the infant from choking, even pacifiers have been seen to help babies swallow. Demonstration: Pass Out “Suckers”. 2003 study found that infants who slept on their backs were less likely than infants who slept on their stomachs to develop ear infections, stuffy noses, or fevers

Why is Safe to Sleep important? ITS LAW!!! NC SIDS law went

Why is Safe to Sleep important? ITS LAW!!! NC SIDS law went into affect December 1, 2003. Some of the criteria of the law include: infants are to be placed on their backs to sleep. a completed waiver be on file for an alternate sleep position that parents sign a statement confirming they received a copy of the policy and the facility reviewed the policy with them. all child care providers caring for infants 12 months of age or younger receive training on safe sleep practices within four months of assuming care giving responsibilities and every three years from the completion of previous ITS-SIDS training.

How to create a Safe Sleep Environment? Make sure baby is not to

How to create a Safe Sleep Environment? Make sure baby is not to hot. Remember: if your comfortable, baby is comfortable. Remove blankets, pillows, bumpers, and extra bedding. Baby should be laying on a firm mattress with a fitted sheet. This can reduce the likelhood of strangulation. NO toys, stuffed animals, mobiles, or small objects in crib where baby can smother themselves or choke. Consider putting babies in sleepers that button instead of ones that zip up to avoid choking hazards. Remember: Cribs DO NOT kill infants the things placed in the infants environment may.

Things to Remember…. . • Allow your infant to roll over onto their tummy

Things to Remember…. . • Allow your infant to roll over onto their tummy on their own, this may be a sign infant is ready for “tummy time” which helps develop certain motor skills. • SUIDs is Sudden UNEXPLAINED infant death syndrome. There are studies that are still being done to find the cause of infants dying between 1 to 12 months, but sometimes infants pass without us knowing. • DO NOT be afraid to ask question when it comes to the safety of your baby.
