Coordinating Conjunctions • They are used to correct run-on sentences and when corrected they create compound sentences. • They join equals. Ex: Words to words Phrases to Phrases Clauses to Clauses • The conjunctions must go in the middle and cannot go in the beginning or the end of the sentence. • They form loose connections in the sentence.
Coordinating Conjunctions Punctuation • When two words, phrases, or clauses are joined, no commas are placed. • When three or more words, phrases, or clauses are joined, commas are placed between each word, phrase, or clause. • Two independent clauses need a comma before the conjunction.

Subordinating Conjunctions • They are used to correct run-on sentences and are corrected to make compound sentences. • When two clauses are joined together it makes one clause dependent. • They conjunctions may appear at the beginning or middle of a sentence.
Subordinating Conjunction Punctuation • If the dependent clause is at the beginning of the sentence, commas are put between the two clauses. • If the independent clause is at the beginning of the sentence, commas are not put in between the sentences. • You never separate the clauses with a period.
