The Adjective Clause • A clause (a group of words containing a subject and a verb) that modifies a noun or pronoun • An adjective clause will FOLLOW the word or words it modifies • Tells what kind or which one • Often begin with a relative pronoun – That, Which, Whom, Whose (When, Where)

Identifying Adjective Clauses • The book that I am reading in English 11 A is the best book I’ve ever read. • Look for your key word (relative pronoun) • The book that I am reading in English 11 A is the best book I’ve ever read. • Look for the noun preceding it • The book that I am reading in English 11 A is the best book I’ve ever read. • Ask the question—Which book? OR What kind of book? • The book that I am reading in English 11 A is the best book I’ve ever read.

Check! • The book that I am reading in English 11 A is the best book I’ve ever read. • Take out the adjective clause, beginning with the relative pronoun • The book is the best book I’ve ever read. • You should be left with an sensible independent clause that I am reading in English 11 A
