SubModule EAssessment Strategies 27 th Nov to 10
Sub-Module E-Assessment Strategies (27 th Nov to 10 th December) Nilza Costa, Rita Leal and Diogo Casanova University of Aveiro, Portugal
What are Students expected to learn? • Competence: • Understand concepts and design practices of e-assessment. • Learning Outcomes: • Analyze the concept of e-assessment on the basis of updated literature; • Design strategies and tools for e-assessment in a specific learning context.
Teaching and learning activities 1 st Week • Presentation of the topic by the teachers (26 th Nov) • Students’ participation in a forum about the topic based on the analysis of the literature and on teachers’ questions (until 05 Dec) 2 nd Week • Presentation of the topic by the teachers (03 Dec) • Design, by the students, of an e-assessment strategy (including tools) to an e-assessment task (until 12 Dec)
Tasks, and students’ assessment • Task 1 (1 st week): Discussion about eassessment: concept, principles and your experience. • 40% - based on the quality of students’ participation in the forum. • Task 2 (2 nd week): Design an e-assessment strategy and tools. • 60% - based on the quality of the work presented.
Starting discussing the topic of the sub-module…
1 st activity: thinking about personal concepts and practices of students’ assessment • Participants, of each country, are asked - to discuss among them about (a) what is assessment and (b) significant experiences they have had concerning their learning assessment. - to select one student to report to all in the VC the conclusions of the group taking into account the answers to the questions below. (10 min) Questions: • 1. When we speak about assessment what do we think? What is assessment? • 2. What significant experience can you report about students’ learning assessment ?
One possible definition of learning assessment • Assessment is the ongoing process of gathering, analysing and reflecting on data in order to give a informed and consistent judgement that will enhance students learning. (Center for Teaching Learning and Assessment - NHSC)
That is, in diagram way … What is expected from Sts’ learning (LO) Judgment to enhance Sts’ learning What evidence do we have about what Sts have learnt?
In order to be able to judge, one needs • To define criteria (attribute of the object under assessed) Ex: scientific rigor; relevance (e. g of student’s oral participation) • For each criteria to establish indicators (specific description of an outcome in terms of observable and assessable behaviors) Ex: The student reply is in accordance with the scientific point of view; the student reply contributes to the clarification of the issue under discussion
2 nd activity: thinking about personal concepts and practices of students’ e- assessment • Ask again the participants: 1. And what about e-assessment? Have you already listen about that? What do we know about e-assessment? 2. What experiences do you have related to e-assessment?
One possible definition of EAssessment E-assessment (electronic assessment): processes involving the implementation of ICT for the recording, transmission, presentation and processing of assessment material. (Ridgway and Mc. Cusker, 2007, pg. 41)
(e-)Assessment of students learning: principles • Assessment is not an end in itself but a vehicle for educational improvement; • Assessment is most effective when it reflects an understanding of learning as multidimensional, integrated, and revealed in performance over time. It entails not only what students know but what they can do with what they know;
(e-)Assessment of students learning: principles • Assessment works best when it’s clear and explicitly to the students involved; • Assessment requires attention to the learning outcomes and it should gives attention to the experiences that lead to those outcomes;
(e-)Assessment of students learning: principles • It works best when it is an ongoing process and not when it is episodic; • Assessment needs to have an important formative role. Adapted from AAHE assessment forum (1996)
Task 1 (due to 5 th December) 1. Read the proposed bibliography (available in the Moodle environment). Divide each resource for one member of each group; 2. After reading the bibliography discuss the findings in your respective group forum. Focus your discussion on the topic of e-Assessment mainly the concept, principles and practices.
Thank you for your attention and participation AND let´s continue to work!
