Submandibular salivary gland position It lies in the
Submandibular salivary gland • • position: It lies in the digastric triangle overlapping its boundaries. Shape: The gland is formed by large superficial part and smaller deep part.
Surfaces & relations: (3) • Superficial (inferolateral) surface: 1. 2. 3. 4. skin. , superficial fascia containing platysma muscle. Deep fascia. Facial vein and cervical branch of facial nerve. Submandibular lymph nodes
• 1. 2. 3. Lateral surface; Submandibular fossa of mandible. insertion of medial pterygoid. facial artery.
• Medial surface: • Mylohyoid muscle (ant. ). • Hyoglossus (post. ) separated from it by a group of important structures called lateral relations of Hyoglossus muscle.
Lateral relations of hyoglossus muscle: • From above downwards: 1. Styloglossus muscle. 2. Lingual nerve. 3. Submandibular ganglion. 4. Deep part of submandibular gland. 5. Hypoglossal nerve. 6. Suprahyoid artery.
Submandibular duct: • It is about 2 inches long. • It arises from the medial surface of the superficial part of the gland.
• It opens in the floor of moth on the summit of sublingual papillae.
Blood supply: • • Arterial: Facial and lingual arteries. Venous: Facial and lingual veins. • Lymph drainage: • Submandibular lymph nodes. • Deep cervical lymph nodes
Nerve supply: • Sensory: Lingual nerve. • Sympathetic: Plexus around facial artery. • Parasympathetic: • Preganglionic fibres: Chorda tympani (VII) • Ganglion: Submandibular ganglion • Postganglionic fibres: Lingual
Sublingual salivary gland • It is the smallest of the three salivary glands. Position: • It lies beneath the mucosa of the floor of the mouth, lodged in the sublingual fossa of the mandible. • It comes close to its fellow behind the symphesis menti.
Sublingual ducts: • 8 - 20 ducts arise from the gland open on the summit of the sublingual fold. • Some ducts of the anterior part of the gland collect into major sublingual duct that open close or with the submandibular duct.
Arterial supply: • Sublingual branch of lingual artery. • Twigs from Submental artery. Venous drainage: • Lingual and facial veins. Lymph drainage: • Submental and submandibular lymph nodes into deep cervical lymph nodes.
Nerve supply: • Sensory: Lingual nerve. • Sympathetic: • Plexus around lingual and facial arteries. • Parasympathetic: Preganglionic fibres: Chorda tympani (VII) Ganglion: Submandibular ganglion Postganglionic fibres: Lingual
