What Is a Subluxation? ● Historically based on a static model, or “bone out of place”. This evolved to a dynamic model, focusing more on joint motion or function. https: //bluespringchiropractic. com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/subluxation-comparison. jpg
D. D. Palmer’s Theories on Subluxations 1. Inflammation caused by the displacement of anatomical parts, “bone of out place” -1895 2. Focus was now on Nerve Impingements as the source of disease 1904 3. The idea of nerve stretching and slackening developed and became the critical factor- 1910 a. Subluxations caused increased nerve tension which increased vibrational impulses to organs and caused inflammation
B. J. Palmer ● Developer of Chiropractic ● Founded a protective society providing legal services to Chiropractors ○ Freeing the Innate not treating patients ○ Adjust the subluxation, let the body heal itself ● The ACC currently defines it as “a complex of functional, structural, and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ system function and general health. ”
Controversy (with Western Medicine) ● The use of the term subluxation has created much controversy ● Dictionary definition: a partial dislocation of one of the bones in a joint (“Subluxation”) ○ Western medicine adheres to this definition ● This difference in definitions between chiropractic and western medicine creates confusion in the public eye and hinders chiropractic profession’s reputation in western medicine ○ More research needs to be done to prove efficacy and legitimacy
Lack of Literature Based Proof ● No evidence in literature proving adjusting subluxations prevent disease ○ One group did a study looking at articles on chiropractic and none of them provided proof that adjusting subluxations help prevent primary or secondary disease ○ “Even if there was an improvement of a condition following treatment, this does not mean that the underlying theory is correct. ”. (Gocalves, 2018) ● Lack research and make invalid claims ○ Make bogus claims to scare parents into thinking they must bring children to adjust subluxation or they will have health issues late in life ○ “Promote parental fear that babies have been ‘damaged’ when they go through birth canal” (Polevoy, 2018)
Why Are Subluxations Important? ● Subluxations are the foundation of chiropractic- our bread and butter! ● Chiropractors as a profession need to work together to create a universally accepted definition of a subluxation. ● In doing this, we can establish a true understanding for all professions and eliminate the dichotomy between Western Medicine and Chiropractic
