Subject-Verb Agreement
WALT 1. To recapitulate what subjects and verbs are. 2. To know that subjects must agree with verbs.
Most sentences have a verb. So, what are verbs? • A verb is an action word.
Guess what is the verb?
Most sentences have a subject too. So, what are subjects? • The subject performs the action described by the verb. • The crocodile walks. Subject = crocodile
How to find out which is the subject? • Find the verb. E. g. walks • Next, ask Who? or What? and put in the verb. E. g. Who walks or what walks i. e. The crocodile walks.
Guess what is the subject? The chick hatches.
• The hamsters are dancing.
• The cows hug each other.
Look at the sentences below. Do you find anything wrong with them? 1. My mother go to the market every day. 2. They is laughing. 3. He love durians. 4. Joshua and his brother eats together during recess.
Subject + Verb + Object English sentences follow the order: Subject + Verb + Object Example: She Subject (Noun) Person that does the action, person or thing being described likes ice-cream. + Verb + Object Usually an action word, can have present/past tense
Subject-Verb Agreement Grammar rule: Singular subjects (nouns) go with singular verbs Plural subjects (nouns) go with plural verbs Singular subject (noun) = one E. g. Thomas is a boy. He likes pears. Plural subject (noun) = more than one E. g. Mickey and Minnie are friends. They have many story books.
Subject-Verb Agreement When your subject(noun) is singular, you must use singular verbs! When your subject(noun) is plural, you must use plural verbs! Singular Verbs Plural Verbs 1. is, was 1. are, were 2. goes 2. go 3. does 3. do 4. has 4. have 5. Any verb + ‘s’ behind e. g. walk+ s 5. Any verb + without ‘s’ behind e. g. walk
Special Case: ‘I’ I = one person = singular subject (noun) But we NEVER say I is going home. I am going home. I was going home. I love apples (I loves apples X) ‘I’ is used with: 1. the special verb ‘am’. 2. plural verb e. g. was, do, have, go 3. verbs without ‘s’ behind e. g. love
Special Case: ‘You’ You = one person = singular subject (noun) But we NEVER say You is my friend. You are my friend. You were late. You do not go there. (You does not go there. X) ‘You’ is used with: 1. plural verbs e. g. are, do, have, go 2. verbs without ‘s’ behind e. g. walk
