What is a pronoun? • It is a word that is used instead of a noun and still maintains the meaning of the sentence. – The man is from Quebec. – He is from Quebec. – Marcel and I are going to the store. – We are going to the store. – My friends are buying the bread. – They are buying it.

Subject Pronouns • A subject pronoun replaces the noun that is the subject of the sentence. – My father works in Paris. – He works in Paris.

Tu 2 nd person singular • Tu means YOU informally (familiar). • Used when talking to someone informally

Il 3 rd person singular • Il = he or it • It is used when talking about a boy, man, or something “masculine”.

Elle 3 rd person singular • Elle = she or it • It is used to talk about a girl or something “feminine”.

On 3 rd person singular • On = People One They You We (casual speech) Example: On parle francais en Haiti. = They speak French in Haiti. Example: On va au café? = We’re going to the café?

Nous 1 st person plural • Nous = We • It is used when you include yourself in the action with others.

Vous 2 nd person • Vous = You. • It is used to address a group of people. • It is also used to address one person formally • It can be singular or plural.

Ils 3 rd person plural • Ils = They • It is used to talk about a group of boys, guys, men, “masculine” objects, or a mixed group. • It is pronounced exactly the same way as the singular il. Remember, the s is silent.

Elles 3 rd person plural • Elles = they • It is used to talk about a group of females or “feminine” objects. • It is pronounced exactly the same way as the singular elle. Remember, the s is silent.
