What does an ideal GCSE PE student look like? A committed and hard working student. Interested in science and how the body and mind works. A capable sports person; who can perform to a good standard in several different sports/activities. The practical element forms a large part of your assessment and final grade. If you do not currently play or participate in formal sports clubs and competitions, it will impact significantly on your ability to do well. What does the course entail? The combination of the physical performance and academic challenge provides an exciting opportunity for students. You can perform, and then through the academic study learn how to improve your performance though application of theory. Physical Education is learned about through a range of different contexts and the impact it has on both ours and other’s everyday lives. You will learn the reasons why we do things, why some people out perform others, mentally and physically. You will also delve into the ethical considerations behind the use of drugs and also gain an understanding of the consequences of inactivity and poor diet. How will students be assessed? Paper 1 : Physical factors affecting performance 60 marks Paper 2 Socio-cultural issues and sports psychology 60 marks Practical activity (including 1 team sport, 1 individual sport and a choice of a third sport from either team or individual) Analysing and evaluating performance completed as a piece of Written coursework Where can this lead to? GCSE (9– 1) Physical Education is not just an excellent base for an A Level in Physical Education, it can take you much further. For those of you fascinated by the human mind, why not carry on to Psychology? For people into the why of the human race this carries you through to Sociology. This is also an excellent additional qualification for those undertaking the sciences with the intention to move through into medicine or physiotherapy routes.
