What does an ideal History student look like? An ideal History student will be keen to find out more about the 4 different topics you will cover (see below) and develop the following skills: · The significance of events, individuals, issues and societies in history · How and why societies have changed over time · Understanding the nature of historical evidence and the methods used by historians to analyse and evaluate it · Developing an understanding of how the past has been interpreted and represented · Expressing your own historical ideas confidently and effectively What does the course entail? You will cover 4 different topics; Medicine through time 1250 – present, The American West 1835 -95, Anglo Saxon and Norman England 1066 -88 and Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918 -39. For more information have a look at the options booklet. How will students be assessed? These are examined over three papers. Paper 1: Medicine through time 1250 -present. Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes Paper 2: The American West 1835 -95 and Anglo Saxon and Norman England 1066 -88. Duration: 1 hour and 45 minutes Paper 3: Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918 -39. Duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes For more information have a look at the options booklet. Where can this lead to? Students who study History have access to a wide range of career and educational opportunities. By the end of the course you will have learnt how to analyse and evaluate information, how to weigh up evidence and how to communicate complex ideas effectively. These skills are recognised and valued by all employers, sixth forms and colleges. History combined with Maths and Science subjects creates an attractive portfolio of qualifications, enabling a student to move on to a University Science-based course. Combined with English and a Modern Foreign Language, it would provide an excellent basis for arts or language -based degrees. If you plan to go straight into a job after your formal education ends then, of course, many employers welcome subjects such as History, as success in this subject demonstrates competence in basic skills such as reading and writing.
