An effective introduction should. . . • • • show that you are going to answer the question/ complete the task. show that you understand the issues, their implications and context. indicate the structure of your answer, making clear the main areas that you are going to write about. show evidence that you have carried out some research by making a reference to one of your sources. consist of approximately 10% of the total number of words (e. g. 150 words in a 1500 word assignment)
Effective paragraphs should. . . • Be themed • address a specific issue relating to the argument/discussion you are presenting in your essay. • begin with a simple ‘topic’ sentence(s) which clearly shows what the paragraph is about; (ii) develop this in the form of information that looks at the topic in detail; (iii)finish with a sentence that brings this to an end and, where possible, make a link to the next paragraph. • be approximately 100 (minimum) 150 words in length to accomplish the above requirements. • be sequenced so that your argument or exploration progresses stepbystep.
An effective conclusion should. . . • be a well thought out summary of the main points/themes raised in the essay • express these aspects in a fresh way: avoid using the same language again • fit in with the rest of the assignment.
