STUDY OF REVELATION 1

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John” Rev. 1: 1 It is the ‘Revelation’ (singular) not ‘Revelations’ There is a two fold meaning: 1. It reveals Jesus Christ and what He will do in the future. 2. Jesus reveals what God gave Him to give to John to write for us. The future is revealed: “Things which must shortly come to pass” (Not MAY come to pass, but MUST come to pass)

“Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus

“Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. ” Rev. 1: 2 There is a 3 fold purpose found in this book: 1. To bear record of the Word of God. What is found in this book is consistent with the rest of the Bible. “And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on, ) but stand thou still a while, that I may show thee the word of God” 1 Samuel 9: 27

“Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus

“Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. ” Rev. 1: 2 There is a 3 fold purpose found in this book: 2. To give the testimony of Jesus Christ. Tell what He has done in the past and what He will do in the future. “This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen. ” John 21: 24, 25

“Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus

“Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. ” Rev. 1: 2 There is a 3 fold purpose found in this book: 3. For John to describe all the things he saw.

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy,

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. ” Rev. 1: 3 This is the first ‘Blessed’ of 7 found in Revelation. As Jesus started His Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes, these ‘Blesseds’ are the Beatitudes of Revelation. The promise of blessings is not given to those who understand everything found in Revelation! Notice the ones who will be blessed: 1. Everyone who reads the book. 2. Everyone who hears the words. 3. Everyone who keeps the words. There has never been a better time for this study than RIGHT NOW!

“John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and

“John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne. ” Rev. 1: 4 John is writing to the 7 churches in Asia which will be identified in Revelation 1: 11 It is John who is writing promising grace and peace but notice who the words are from: 1. The One which is – Jesus at the right hand of the Father as our great High Priest. 2. The One which was – the Jesus Who came into the earth to die on a cross to be our Savior. 3. The One which is to come – Jesus coming as King of kings “Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” Hebrews 13: 8

“John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and

“John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne. ” Rev. 1: 4 From the 7 Spirits before throne. (Seven Spirits will also be mentioned in 3: 1, 4: 5 and 5: 6. ) These are not 7 different Spirits but the 7 attributes of the Holy Spirit with the number 7 revealing ‘divine completion’. “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And (1) the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, (2) the spirit of wisdom and (3) understanding, (4) the spirit of counsel and (5) might, (6) the spirit of knowledge and of (7) the fear of the LORD” Isaiah 11: 1, 2 (Verse 1 promises Jesus and verse 2 describes the Spirit that will be in Him”

“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of

“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood. ” Rev. 1: 5 The book is not only from John but also from Jesus! Notice the beautiful description of the One who has given us this book. 1. The faithful witness – He was a Prophet at His first coming and did all He promised to do. 2. The first begotten of the dead – His resurrection led to Him being our Great High Priest 3. The Prince of the kings of the earth – He will return as King of kings. 4. He is the One who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood!

“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him

“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. ” Rev. 1: 6 We are already kings and priests to serve Him now. “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” 1 Peter 2: 9 We will be kings with Him on earth one day. “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” Rev. 5: 10 “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years” Rev. 20: 6 For His glory and dominion forever!

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. ” Rev. 1: 7 This is a promise of Jesus coming in glory at the end of the Tribulation Period. (Every eye will see Him. ) He ascended from the Mount of Olives and a cloud received Him out of their sight. “And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight” Acts 1: 9 The cloud could have been not from weather but the host of angels receiving Him back to Heaven. “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” Hebrews 12: 1

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. ” Rev. 1: 7 The clouds He is coming back with could be all the redeemed He is bringing from Heaven to rule over the Earth. “To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints” 1 Thessalonians 3: 13 The clouds could also include His angels. “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory” Matthew 25: 31

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. ” Rev. 1: 7 There will be great sorrow for those who had rejected Him! This includes the nation of Israel who wanted Him crucified. “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. ” Zechariah 12: 10 It will also include all the kindred (nations) of the earth who must face Him after having believed in the Antichrist. EVEN SO, AMEN! EVEN SO, SO BE IT!

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. ” Rev. 1: 8 Jesus speaks for the first time: 1. “I am Alpha and Omega” – “I am your A and your Z” 2. “I am the beginning – the One Who was in Genesis 1: 1. ” 3. “I am the ending – the One Who will be in Rev. 22: 21” John adds to the description: 1. The One Who is our Great High Priest. 2. The One Who was Jesus on Earth as our Savior. 3. The One Who is to come as our great King. HE IS THE ONE WHO IS THE ALMIGHTY!

REVELATION 1: 9

I. The Past – “the things that John saw” “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ” Rev. 1: 9 John identifies himself as the writer. He had been exiled as a prisoner on the Isle of Patmos. Why was he exiled? 1. For his stand for the Word of God! 2. For his testimony of Jesus Christ!

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a

“I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, ” Rev. 1: 10 There are 2 different things that John could have meant when he used the term “Lord’s day”: He was worshipping on the first day of the week. He was taken by the Spirit into the future to live in what will one day be the “Day of the Lord”.

“Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou

“Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea ” Rev. 1: 11 John realizes the One Who is speaking to him is none other than Jesus Himself! Jesus tells him to write what he sees in a book and to send letters to seven specific churches that were in Asia at that time: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.

“And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned,

“And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. ” Rev. 1: 12 -16

Compare the One Who John saw to the One Who Daniel saw on the

Compare the One Who John saw to the One Who Daniel saw on the banks of the River Hiddekel “And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel; Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. ” Daniel 10: 4 -6 John’s description: clothed with garment down to the foot, golden girdle, eyes as flames of fire, feet like fine brass, voice as the sound of many waters.

“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he

“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last. ” Rev. 1: 17 John once walked with Jesus and leaned on His bosom at the Lord’s Supper but he has no strength when he sees the Lord in His glory! Compare to Daniel’s reaction at his vision: “Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground. And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling” Daniel 10: 9 -11

“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for

“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. ” Rev. 1: 18 Notice the identification Jesus gives of Himself: 1. He is alive. 2. He was dead at one time. 3. He is now alive and will be forever more. 4. He now has the keys of hell and of death.

“Write things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things

“Write things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter. ” Rev. 1: 19 Jesus gives the outline He wants John to use when he writes the book of Revelation. 1. Write things which he has seen. (1: 1 -20) 2. Write things which currently existed in the seven churches. (2: 1 -3: 22) 3. Write things which shall be hereafter when the church age is over. (4: 1 -22: 21)

“Write things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things

“Write things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter. ” Rev. 1: 19 Notice the second coming of Jesus is promised in each section. 1. Write things which he has seen. (1: 1 -20) “Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him” Rev. 1: 7 2. Write things which currently existed in the seven churches. (2: 1 -3: 22) “Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. ” Rev. 3: 11 3. Write things which shall be hereafter when the church age is over. (4: 1 -22: 21) “Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be” Rev. 22: 12

“The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and

“The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. ” Rev. 1: 20 There was one candlestick in the Tabernacle and Temple but it had 7 lamps. “And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made: his shaft, and his branches, his bowls, his knops, and his flowers, shall be of the same. And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side --- thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it. ” Exodus 25: 31, 32, 37

“The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and

“The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches. ” Rev. 1: 20 Jesus identifies the seven stars and the seven candlesticks: 1. The 7 stars are the messengers (or pastors) of the 7 churches. The word ‘angels’ is translated from the Greek aggelos which means messenger or agent. 2. The 7 candlesticks are the 7 churches that will be receiving the letters. NOTE: The word ‘mystery’ is used often in the New Testament to reveal something that has not been revealed before.
