Overview & Recommendations • Overview: Options for Teaching a Course Abroad • Option 1: Utilize Tennessee Consortium for International Studies (Tn. CIS) • Option 2: Submit Study Abroad Course Proposal to ETSU International Advisory Council (IAC) • Preparation Recommendations: • Recommended 1 ½ - 2 years preparation prior to first study abroad trip • Recommended to utilize “Option 1: Tn. CIS” for faculty teaching/planning their first trip • http: //www. tncis. org • Tn. CIS Application Window for Summer 2021 • Nov 1, 2019 until Feb 1, 2020
Pros Option 1: Tn. CIS • Can travel with an already-established program • Tn. CIS handles: • Assessing student applications • Ensuring all students submit paperwork • Health and travel insurance for your students • Location • Airfare • Activities/Excursions • Emergency Assistance • Finding a classroom • Student Money • Travel Advisory Updates • Risk Assessment • Disciplinary Action (if necessary)
Pros Option 1: Tn. CIS • Program Director is Available on Site • Other faculty members will teach courses on the same trip • In-country support for emergencies or mishaps • Able to focus on course itself, rather than travel planning • Faculty receive the following from Tn. CIS • $2, 200 remuneration from Tn. CIS • Any required visitor's visa (cost reimbursement) • Round trip international airline ticket out of Nashville, Tennessee • Accommodations and meals based on the program budget • All transportation and entry tickets on sponsored excursions • Limited health insurance while abroad • Graduate level courses possible: recommended to consult with Tn. CIS director prior to applying
Cons Option 1: Tn. CIS (Source: Tn. CIS Faculty Page) • Deadlines are 1 ½ years in advance • Faculty are responsible for individual course recruitment or the course may not make (this is also true for ETSU Study Abroad Courses) • Faculty are teaching for Tn. CIS, not ETSU • Faculty are paid the same, regardless of rank • Expenses not covered by Tn. CIS • Passport • Health insurance (beyond the limited insurance provided abroad) • Transportation/Lodging to and from the departure airport • Transportation/Lodging to and from the faculty/student orientations • Personal spending money
Pros Option 2: ETSU Study Abroad Course Proposal • • • Great for established study abroad programs that travel each year Faculty can use previous experience to create a site Can take advantage of networks; such as other universities Appropriate for undergraduate and graduate level courses Are able to plan group’s excursions, locations, and create own program • Able to accept/decline students based on criteria that you create
Cons Option 2: ETSU Study Abroad Course Proposal • Faculty responsible for planning all logistics • Travel • Course Budget (course must pay for itself) • Tuition Revenue • Faculty Travel • Faculty Salary • Faculty responsible for reviewing the following: • Student applications, accept/decline students, ensuring students have adequate health insurance, ensuring students submit all documents and reviewing those documents, • US Department of State and CDC region, country & city health and security risks • Taking emergency preparedness training • Following all ETSU, Study Abroad, and Board of Trustees policies • Other responsibilities: • Responsible for all students while on the trip; including their occasional challenging behaviors!
Recommendations for Option 2: ETSU Recommendations on Making Course More Marketable • Consult initial idea with chair of department (could be someone else in your department proposing a course, which can create competition for the same pool of applicants) • Create a course that counts as credit toward degree and/or general education requirement • Affordable • less than $4, 000 – including housing, meals, and airfare • Airline tickets are more affordable in May than June • Minimum 2 weeks, 3 weeks is most common • Consider other trips in terms of competition: are you going to the same location? Is it the same field of study? • Seek advice of faculty members who have led the same trip for several years • May is a good time so that students can take other summer courses Other Recommendations: • 2 Faculty Members (one can be an assistant or graduate student). • Course should be in a country that contributes to content (e. g. it wouldn’t make sense to have English Literature course in China) • Consider safety concerns in a country • Course is typically 3 credit hours • Course can be hybrid: ½ online and ½ study abroad
Requirements for Option 2: ETSU • Course Requirements • Course must be experimental course or already established course • Cannot be special topics or independent study course • Location must add value to the course • Read & adhere to faculty manual, study abroad policy, and ETSU policies • Plan early (1 ½ - 2 years in advance) • Adhere to deadlines • No minors under the age of 18 • Students must be admitted to ETSU and enrolled in the course and taking the course for a grade (i. e. current ETSU students, students from other schools after ETSU acceptance • Courses may not be appropriate for community members as a means to tour a country • Students cannot audit their study abroad course; it must be for a grade • Non-ETSU students must apply as a visiting student at ETSU in order to study abroad
Requirements, continued… • • • Must have at least 2. 5 GPA No or mild Disciplinary Record Submit an Application Submit official transcript Pay application fee Submit all post acceptance documents on Bucs Abroad Portal prior to departure (e. g. emergency contact, flight information, health info, etc. )
