Teacher Survey Results 75% somewhat to very interested Most interested in projects that: – – Motivate students Enhance learning Prepare students for real-world situations Empower students to take ownership of their education Greatest factors influencing teachers: – – – Time to create lessons involving 21 st century standards Knowledge of how or what to implement Adequate training Support when implementing 21 st century standards Balancing time to address content standards while implementing 21 st century standards
Phase 3 ~ Diagnostic Analysis of Profiling - SWOT Analysis – Strengths & Weaknesses (Internal) – Opportunities & Threats (External) Problem Diagnosis – Weaknesses & Threats to determine symptoms and causes - most worrisome problems
Key Strengths The school district's philosophy embraces 21 st century learning goals and finding ways to improve motivation and learning. The administration and technology staff are responsive to individuals who express a need for equipment or support. Teachers and other school employees genuinely care about focusing on the students' needs first.
Critical Weaknesses Indirect and ineffective communication Lack of two-way communication to determine student and teacher needs Teachers are introduced to technology tools but are not provided with the support and time needed to implement these tools. The quality and amount of technology integration into content varies by the demand for tools and services.
Key Opportunity Our Key Opportunity – To provide instruction and support for integrating 21 st century learning standards into the curriculum in order to increase relevance, student motivation and ownership of their education which will help prepare them for the work force, higher education and life.
Key Threat Cultural differences between: – home and school environments – technology immigrants and technology natives – peer groups.
Most Worrisome Problems Budget Motivation Marketing/Strategic Planning Communication Technology Tools and Training
Phase 4 ~ Prescriptive Strategic Plan – Strategic Choice – Mission Statement – Overall Objectives – Tactical Plans – Necessary Conditions Necessary to Implement Plan
Strategy Statement To move from the Constraint quadrant to the Leverage quadrant of our strategic match position, we will pursue actions to improve our internal weaknesses (communication with our key customer, the student) so we can leverage our opportunities (instruction and support for integrating technology). This will result in a stronger school because our internal strengths will meet the opportunities the external environment has given us.
Mission Statement TEE (Technology Empowers Everyone) exists at Glenwood Springs High School to empower and motivate students to take ownership of their education and to bridge the gap between student, staff and the community. TEE will accomplish this by providing and coaching learning opportunities through technology to students and teachers and making connections between the classroom and life outside of school.
TEE Objectives TEE will be an elective class offered for credit. TEE members will be leaders in the implementation of 21 st century learning standards at the school to meet the needs of students and staff. TEE members will work as consultants for students and teachers to develop projects that use technology to increase student achievement and motivation. TEE members will learn and implement new technologies and global communication opportunities. TEE members will work with mentors inside and outside the school and apply new programs and skills.
Tactical Plans Goal: Successfully equip T. E. E. to serve the students, staff, and community – Increase enrollment of TEE by a minimum of 4 students. – Define 5 teachers that would be interested in implementing a TEE project before the end of the 2007 -2008 school year. – Select projects based on teachers’ content area but also off the marketing research. – Learn how to effectively communicate and work with customers/teachers.
Tactical Plans Goal: Improve school communication with the students – Develop a survey or feedback system for students to share with the school and district. – Explore broadcast media to reach students. – Set up an online communication tool or messaging system for teachers to communicate with students and develop web pages for a target team of teachers.
Tactical Plans Goal: Improve school communication with the staff – Develop formal evaluations of the TEE team for teachers and students. – Create a TEE area onto the school website with a form to communicate their needs with TEE. – Once a quarter have TEE members present on an IDD day to teachers with success stories and recognition. – For each content area develop a checklist showing how student needs and wants from the survey meet content and educational standards
Tactical Plans Goal: To provide training necessary for the successful implementation of 21 st century standards to meet specific content area standards – Have a TEE orientation workshop to develop project plans – Educate teachers and students on copyright laws and acceptable use policies
Tactical Plans Goal: To provide adequate access to technology to students and staff – Determine what students need computers at home and connect them with Computers for Kids – Research and post instructions on gaining open source software
Conditions for Implementation Increase T. E. E. student enrollment to 6 students for Spring 2008 Get the commitment of 4 – 5 staff members to complete Spring 2008 projects Design effective ongoing feedback and communication Have a TEE student present needs and wants to the district technology committee on a regular basis Invite District IT Match 21 st Century learning goals, content standards with technology projects (survey results)
Phase 5 ~ Implementation Generate Strong teacher buy-in – – Commit to a project Begin with Guaranteed wins Market Successes Provide Recognition Incentives Strategies to Sustain the project – Develop mentoring and training modules to support projects – Research Web 2. 0 tools for best use in curriculum
