Amendment 15 – Gave African Americans men the right to vote. B. Amendment 19 – Gave all women the right to vote.
10. Who was Lyndon Johnson? He was President of the U. S. A after J. F. K was assassinated; he signed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act into law; Johnson was worried because many African Americans were threatened by violence and denied these basic rights by many whites. 11. Who was Cesar Chavez? Fought for civil rights; worked hard to help migrant workers get better working Conditions and better pay; he formed a union
Assassinations Rock America 12. Who were some of the major key people that were assassinated during the 1960 s? A. President John F. Kennedy – was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas in 1963 during a parade; many people were upset because he was a popular president; this made the U. S Secret Service make toucher security when a president appears in public; many did not like he stood for equality for all
B. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – shot and killed in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee; was the leader of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960 s; many did not like his view on equal treatment C. Robert F. Kennedy – was J. F. K’s Younger brother; worked in Government; he wanted to run for the Democratic nomination of president but was shot in a hotel in Los Angeles, California because of his support for Israel.

*How did the space exploration (space race) develop in the late 1950 s? the U. S. A and the Soviet Union developed their space programs in hopes of sending a satellite or a man into space; the Soviets won by sending a satellite into space as well as having a man orbit the Earth; U. S. A was the first to put a man on the moon (Neil Armstrong).
*What is NASA? National Aeronautics and Space Administration A space agency that gives a lot of attention to satellites; they are used for valuable purposes like watching military movements, spotting severe weather, and sending phone and TV signals.
*How did TV impact American society in the 1950 s? Americans were able to get the news from the watching TV, watch movies, and be entertained; events from the world could now be watched on the television
Soviet Union Breaks Apart *Why were the Soviet Union struggling in the late 1980 s? It had serious economic problems and restless citizens; they did not have free speech, free press, or freedom of religion; they were a communist country; Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev decided to make some changes starting with freedom of speech, build the economy
*Did Mikhail Gorbachev’s new ideas work? No, people now started to speak out and demand independence for their countries now that they had freedom of speech; Poland was the first to resist; Hungary and Czechoslovakia began to call for freedom as well; the Iron Curtain had finally come down
*How did President Ronald Reagan feel about the Soviets? He was a fierce critic; he wanted to stop Communism around the world; tried to persuade the Soviets to reduce the number of their nuclear missiles; used harsh words like “evil empire” about the Soviet Union publically;
*What did President Reagan do to further irritate the Soviets? Spend more money researching satellites that could shoot down Soviet missiles from space, using ray beams; this made the soviets feel threatened. *How did the Soviet’s respond? They spend more money on military and less on the needs of their citizens.
Terrorists Strike America *What happened on the morning of September 11, 2001? Four terrorists hijacked four airplanes and flew two of them into two of the world’s tallest buildings at the World Trade Center in New York City; another plane smashed into the Pentagon building in Washington D. C; last one crashed into a filed in Pennsylvania after passengers fought with terrorists.
• What was America’s response to the events of September 11 th? President George Bush decided that America would fight back; he committed to a War on Terrorism in response to the events of September 11; he wanted to prevent terrorist activities all over the world;
*What was America’s Response? A. Increasing America’s security B. Searching for terrorists C. Destroying camps where terrorists are trained D. Forming alliances with other countries to fight terrorism E. Dealing with countries that let terrorists live there F. Finding out who give terrorists money G. Putting America’s military into position for military action
*Who is the enemy? Osama bin Laden, a terrorists believed to have planned the attacks; the U. S. A military moved into Afghanistan to look for him and his group members (Al-Qa’eda) but never found him;
*How was Iraq involved? The Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, was suspected of helping terrorists; he refused to cooperate with the United Nations when they wanted to send inspectors to Iraq to look for power weapons called weapons of mass destruction; U. S government was afraid he would give those weapons to terrorists *What happened after the U. S entered Iraq in March 2003? The Iraqi government fell quickly, and Hussein was captured in December 2003; Iraq is now free from a brutal dictator
*How has lives changed after 9/11? A. Military – heavy military involvement in Afghanistan; later found a new enemy (The Taliban) B. Deportations – sent many people born in other countries back to their countries C. Air Travel – long lines at airports D. Surveillance – more security cameras in many places
Impact of the Computer & the Internet *How did the personal computer impact American Life? First sold in 1970 s; help businesses be more productive; the internet is a way to link personal computers anywhere in the world
*What were the impacts of the Personal Computer and Internet? A. People can work at home and spend more time with their families B. People can research information for work, school, or fun. C.
