SWP Mission Statement The mission of the Student Wellness Program is to engage, educate and empower students to promote overall wellness and personal effectiveness of the individual as well as the collective College community.

 Engage. . . We engage students to explore the skills, attitudes, and resources

Engage. . . We engage students to explore the skills, attitudes, and resources necessary to both succeed in the college environment and better the communities in which they live. Educate… We educate students on mental health issues, alcohol and other drug prevention, sexual misconduct awareness, as well as teach them about healthy lifestyle choices. Empower… We empower students to enhance their social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual wellness to reach their academic goals and assist them in making the most of their educational experience at Lackawanna College.

The Student Wellness Program Services are designed for addressing issues of adjustment to the college experience. SWP Role Situations of a serious nature are referred out to community agencies or local hospitals with the support and assistance from the Student Wellness Program. The Student Wellness Program offers support, assessment and referral services to all students at Lackawanna College. Assess>Refer>Support

All information shared in SWP appointments including student’s identity are handled confidentially and no materials with identifying information will leave the Student Wellness Program without obtaining a specific release from the student to do so. Limits of Confidentiality There are, however, some exceptions to confidentiality. SWP is required by law to release certain information in instances of child or elder abuse; if there is the possibility of potential harm to the student or others; or as a result of a court order. While these types of events are extremely rare, students should know that these possibilities exist.

How do you know when you should reach out to the Student Wellness Program?

How do you know when you should reach out to the Student Wellness Program? Students need to ask themselves whether their efforts to cope with their current stressors have been effective. If not, they could benefit from contacting SWP and discuss these concerns and be part of the process in seeing what kind of support or interventions may be needed. It can only help! Services are free and confidential for all Lackawanna College students.

Can the SWP help with Alcohol or other Drug issues? SWP is prepared to help any student who feels they might have a problem controlling their intake of substances. Referrals for education on substances to local drug and alcohol providers are made as needed.

Can the Student Wellness Program (SWP) help students with issues related to homelessness and other financial distressing issues? SWP is prepared to help any student connect to community resources to get them on the path to providing for their basic needs.

How does Lackawanna College view participation in the Student Wellness Program? Lackawanna College views student participation in the Student Wellness Program as a positive step towards enhancing the overall quality of one’s life. Your participation within appointments and/or groups with Student Wellness Program staff offers proactive opportunities at building up your strengths as well as preventing obstacles towards your personal and academic goals. In an effort to ensure overall retention efforts at the College, information regarding student usage of SWP services is shared with key Lackawanna College staff, held to the same level of responsibility with respect to confidentiality. This information may include level of participation and cooperation with services offered.
