One semester before student teaching, teacher candidates…. ü Should attend the student teaching pre-application

One semester before student teaching, teacher candidates…. ü Should attend the student teaching pre-application meeting as scheduled by the Director of Field Experiences ü Complete the online Pre-Application form ü Complete the Student Teacher Application Form. ü Both of these are found at My NMU Education tab 3

Student Teaching Pre-application Form Complete the information, read and agree to the “Student Teaching

Student Teaching Pre-application Form Complete the information, read and agree to the “Student Teaching Statement Of Understanding. ” This will be covered in the following slides along with explanations about the statements as needed. The Pre-Application is a one-page simple form that will take you 1 -2 minutes to complete at this meeting. 4

Eligibility requirements q I understand that I must meet all requirements for student teaching

Eligibility requirements q I understand that I must meet all requirements for student teaching prior to student teaching and that if the Director of Field Experiences does not approve my student teaching application, I will not be given a student teaching assignment. q Compliance with all of the stated admission and retention requirements. q For example: Have a 2. 75 GPA or above overall, in the major, minor(s), Professional Education Sequence and the planned program and required cognates combined where applicable, with no grade of C or lower and only one repeat allowed in each category (5 total). 5

q Submit an application for student teaching by the end of the second week

q Submit an application for student teaching by the end of the second week of the semester prior to the semester that the student teaching is anticipated. q Removal of all “I” or “X” grades. q A “C” or above in all education and specialized secondary methods courses. q Completion of all course requirements in the student’s major and minor(s). Requests for exceptions of this requirement will be reviewed by the student’s advisor and the Director of Field Experiences. 6

 q Students who are found to lack the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes

q Students who are found to lack the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes for effective teaching may be dismissed from Teacher Education. q Maintain minimum standards of behavior as prescribed in the section addressing professional integrity. 7

Grading Student teachers will receive one of the following grades for Student Teaching and

Grading Student teachers will receive one of the following grades for Student Teaching and ED 450 Student Teaching Seminar: S (SATISFACTORY) –Pass student teaching with recommendation for Michigan teacher certification P (PASS) -Pass student teaching, WITHOUT recommendation for Michigan teacher U (UNSATISFACTORY) –NOT pass student teaching, WITHOUT recommendation for Michigan teacher. No credit and no certification received. 8

Student teaching assignments I understand that all student teaching assignments are made by the

Student teaching assignments I understand that all student teaching assignments are made by the School of Education and that the assignment is dependent upon the availability of suitable student teaching sites as determined by the School of Education. Student teaching assignments will NOT be made in the school district from which I have graduated, have close relatives involved, have children in the school district or have done significant subbing. We want you to have a fresh and authentic experience in a new school district. 9

Although the prospective student teacher may express a preference, the final decision as to type of assignment, geographical area, school system, grade level and teacher is made by the Director of Field Experiences in cooperation with university supervisors and schools. Students will not attempt to make any part of the student teaching placement on their own. Students will list their three (3) school placement preferences and The Director of Field Experiences will secure the placement. 10

Full and split assignments Full Assignment : Normal assignment is sixteen weeks with one

Full and split assignments Full Assignment : Normal assignment is sixteen weeks with one supervising teacher. Advantage: you can develop a longer term and more in-depth experience with a teacher and students. Split Assignment : Generally eight weeks with one teacher, and the following eight weeks with another in another subject or grade. May also split among different teachers for part of the day throughout the semester. Advantage: has broader and more varied experiences with different teachers, grade levels, subjects and/or settings. *Ultimately, the school district will decide what works best for their teachers and school situation. 11

Special education students MAY PRACTICUM: Special Education Students will complete a four week special

Special education students MAY PRACTICUM: Special Education Students will complete a four week special education internship the May before their student teaching. The first eight weeks in their base certification area and the second eight weeks in a special education setting. 12

Secondary education students Meet with your advisor in your major. Your professor will assist

Pass this information onto the Director of Field Experiences. Placements will be made in middle and/or high school in their majors, and if practical, in their minors. Physical education, art and music may be assigned to a K-12 setting. 13

Student teachers are assigned either locally or out of area Locally: Upper Peninsula Out of Area: According to policies (see next slides). Placements are based on quality, not financial considerations. Students may pay additional costs for some placements. 14

One of the letters must be from an NMU professor. ü Faculty members approve the candidate for an out of area placement. ü Student agrees to pay and all additional costs related to the out-of-area or overseas experience. 15

Urban site examples MICHIGAN: NMU has charter schools in Flint, Pontiac, Port Huron, Saginaw, Ypsilanti, Grand Rapids NEAR BY: Green Bay, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Chicago, IL Rural site examples A unique opportunities to teach in very small rural schools. For example, there are one and two room elementary schools in Toivola, Skanee, Autrain-Onato , Copper Harbor, Big Bay with less than 100 students, some within thirty miles of NMU. 17

American Indian sites NMU Charter Schools in the Upper Peninsula: Nah Tah Wahsh PSA (K-12), Hannahville, MI Bahweting Anishnabe PSA (K-8), Sault Ste Marie, MI: We are able to place student teacher in schools on several reservations around the country. Alternative Sites NMU Charter School: North Star Public School Academy (K-12), Marquette, MI Marquette Area Public Schools Alternative Education Program (912) Other sites are available in and out of the area. 18

Parochial and Private sites A number of Catholic schools serve as sites throughout the

Father Marquette Elementary/ Middle School Other religiously affiliated and independent private sites are available. Ethnically/Racially Diverse Sites Candidates interested in working with culturally and racially diverse students to further develop a multicultural and global perspective, may apply to student teach in any school with 20% or more minority population. 19

For example, Gwinn Area Public Schools have 100% of students at KI Sawyer eligible for free and reduced lunch. International sites We work with Educators Abroad and JCL to secure international student teaching placements. Meet with the International Education Services to discuss the details. We have had student teachers in the following locations: New Zealand Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, China, Italy, Ireland. The same requirements apply for international sites as for the out of area sites. 20

Working I understand that I am to keep myself free of campus and work

Working I understand that I am to keep myself free of campus and work responsibilities during weekdays while student teaching to allow for a full time commitment to teaching, but that I may work Friday 6: 00 p. m. until Sunday 6: 00 p. m. However, I may be asked to terminate such work should the activities interfere with my performance in student teaching. 22

An audit is done on your file before you student teach to ensure that you are prepared to graduate upon completion of student teaching. REGISTER for the following: Student Teaching – 11 credits ED 450 Student Teaching Seminar (online or in-person) – 1 credit ED 412 – CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) – Optional class, but highly recommended. In person Friday/Saturday class– 1 credit 23

Ineligibility I understand that it is my responsibility to report to the Director of

Failure to do so may result in denial to student teach. Withdrawal I understand that it is my responsibility to notify the Director of Field Experiences in writing at least 30 days in advance of my student teaching if I decide to withdraw my application for student teaching. 25

 MTTC Subject Areas I understand that I must pass the appropriate MTTC subject

MTTC Subject Areas I understand that I must pass the appropriate MTTC subject area tests before I receive my teacher certification. Some states have additional requirements for teacher certification. Take your MTTC test either before or during student teaching. Passing is required. 26

CPR and First Aid I understand that I must complete the following before I

Background Check • Here in the School of Education we need verification that your

Background Check • Here in the School of Education we need verification that your fingerprints were taken and a background check was conducted. • MARESA (Marquette Alger Regional Educational Service Agency) is your first point of contact to get paperwork in place. The background check costs $80. 00, cash or check only, and are conducted at the Michigan State Police Department on Baraga Street. • This needs to be done before the first week of student teaching. Beginning in 2018, all student teachers need to have a background check through MARESA. 29

Substitute Teaching Permit • If you are teaching locally, please contact MARESA. A sub

The contact person is Holly Nardi. • If you are student teaching out of the area, or in another state, contact the school district and ask about the steps to secure a substitute teaching license. This is a long process and will require your patience, please start early. 30
