STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY AND LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Recruitment Recruitment: Can’t have a program if we don’t recruit a team! So how do we recruit a team? ? ? This can be tricky, but we are here to help!
Recruitment Continued (March/April) Talk with 6 th grade teachers to create a list of students that would potentially benefit from the program (April/May) Meet with interested students and discuss expectations regarding the program and deliverables (May) Narrow list down to 10 total students. These students should be those that will most benefit from the program AND be the most likely to remain in the program throughout the process. (May/June) Hand out program agreement form to the students and instruct them to take it home to their parent/guardian and return it signed When finished with the process, the leadership group should be between 7 and 10 total students. Groups should not be less than 7 students and cannot be more than 10 students.
Recruitment - Final Tips and Tricks: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Make sure to start the process early! Get feedback from numerous adults in the building Look for student names that come up across numerous individuals Make sure students know what they are getting into! Avoid students that will likely not be returning the building in the subsequent year Try to create a team with a variety of strengths and weaknesses - for example, don’t choose every student with an attendance problem
Program Lessons Program Basics: 1. 6 total lessons 2. Each lesson takes about 15 minutes to complete 3. Each lesson contains a group activity and a short information and debriefing portion 4. Some lessons contain materials – these will be provided 5. Lessons should start in October and finish in April (if formally meeting on a monthly basis and assuming one missed session due to snow days, meetings, etc. )
Program Lessons Program Specifics: Lesson 1: Introduction – overview of program Lesson 2: Self Awareness – recognize one’s own skills Lesson 3: Self Management – set plans and work toward goals Lesson 4: Social Awareness – understand others Lesson 5: Relationship Skills – maintain relationships Lesson 6: Decision Making – make respectful decisions
Service Learning Service learning is providing the students the opportunity to utilize the skills they have learned in a meaningful and impactful way As part of this project, each leadership team in each building is responsible for the completion of a schoolbased service learning project Student projects must work toward improving the climate of the school Goals of the projects should work toward improving attendance and/or reducing suspensions All projects should be student generated (let them decide what they want to do!)
Examples of school-based service learning projects include, but are not limited to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Facilitating focus groups with peers Peer mentoring Peer mediation Environmental strategies like bulletin boards, posters, etc. Serving on the MTSS-B Team or other school committees Assisting with Tier 1 strategies
Program Evaluation Is this really necessary? ? We know it’s annoying, but it is necessary: One of the stipulations of the grant is to evaluate the program properly, so we will do this in the simplest way possible. Here’s the good news: we have developed an evaluation system for this program that is quick and easy Let’s start with the survey itself:
Program Survey The survey contains 39 total questions: • • 4 Demographic Questions 4 Problem Solving Questions 7 ATOD Questions 6 Goal Setting Questions 5 Self Awareness Questions 4 Social Awareness Questions 5 Relationship Skills Questions 4 Decision Making Questions All scales found in the survey have acceptable reliability estimates and have been validated for use in the target population: nerd-talk for the scales should work just fine!
Survey Implementation To make it simpler and to avoid passing surveys back and forth, we developed an electronic evaluation through survey monkey https: //www. surveymonkey. com/r/8 RMFGYY Here’s the method for pre and post testing: September – Tammy will contact you through e-mail with a link to the survey for pre-testing. Secure your building’s computer lab for a period when you will have access to your leadership group Take your group of students to the computer lab. Use the link that was sent to “load” the survey on enough computers so each student can take the survey Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the group to complete the survey. Most will finish in about 15 minutes May – Tammy will send a link to each of you and the entire process is completed for post testing
Evaluation Concluded See? ? Totally painless evaluation. Gives us everything we need to stay in contract compliance, doesn’t strap you for time and inefficiency, and gives us a quantitative way to show off all the great work you are doing with your students. Questions? ? ?
