Frequent Questions What is HPSA? This is a geographic area, population group, or health care facility that has been designated by the Federal government as having a shortage of health care professionals. HPSA are designated using several criteria, including population to clinician ratios. The ration is usually 3, 500 to 1 for primary care: 5, 000 to 1 for dental and 30, 000 to 1 for mental health care.

Information re: Loan Repayment HRSA offers two loan repayment programs for nurses working in designated Health Professional Shortage Areas. Primary care nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and psychiatric nurse specialists are eligible to apply to the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program. Registered nurses, including nurse practitioners are eligible to apply to the NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program.

Receive award preference for these two NHSC loan repayment programs if you meet eligibility and qualifying loan requirements. You may be able to pay off all your loans as qualified disciplines can be eligible for the NHSC Loan Repayment Program Continuation Contract MAT Award Enhancement and receive additional awards in one-year increments. How to Obtain a MAT waiver If you are a physician (MD or DO), nurse practitioner (NP), certified nurse-midwife (CNM), or physician assistant (PA) and have an active Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number to dispense controlled substances, you are eligible for free, discipline -specific MAT Waiver Training. The MD/DO training is 8 hours. The NP, CNM, and PA training courses are 24 hours. Both in-person and online courses are available. You can also access free mentoring services. This helps you employ evidence-based practices when prescribing opioids and effectively use medications in treating OUD. The mentoring program is available by telephone, email, or in person, in some cases.

MAT Training By completing free medication-assisted treatment (MAT) training and obtaining your Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 (DATA 2000) Waiver, you're eligible to receive National Health Service Corps (NHSC) award preference. The NHSC’s partnership with SAMHSA’s Provider Clinical Support System connects you to training for the DATA Waiver, which helps improve access to opioid use disorder (OUD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment.
