Student Intern at WEX Inc. Name: Brenton Wilson Title: Virtual Product Development Intern Dates: May 21 – August 18 Location: South Portland, ME Education: Senior in Computer Science
WEX Inc is a provider of payment processing and information management services • B 2 B • Primarily a business to business industry • Global • Three major areas of business • Fleet, Health, and Travel • Fraud reduction: Restrict purchases by type, amount, date/time, etc… • My program coordinator was Gimbala Sankare
The Virtual department provides digital credit cards for a variety of services • Virtual cards • One-time use • Static (3 years) • Travel • Other
I worked with the virtual product team to help with a variety of tasks • In-house user interface for virtual card management • Waterfall SDLC Agile: Scrum SDLC • Virtual credit card inventory reduction (single use) • Each active credit card costs money each month • Internal Web-based knowledgebase (wiki) • Giving everyone the tools they need to keep doing a great job • Validating database accuracy • Comparing live data from multiple sources and ensuring accurate estimates for business analyst tasks • Additional small projects
I produced multiple deliverables for my team • Confluence-hosted knowledgebase about the Virtual department • Technical documents pertaining to: • Exceptional issues – and their workarounds • Fraud in the Virtual department • Estimated inventory reduction amounts • Potential client lists for marketing staff • By request excel spreadsheets with specific data sets • Constant feedback about Scrum standards and team collaboration • And more
My previous experiences helped me out • COS 420: Introduction to Software engineering • The Scrum SDLC was extensively taught to me in this class last spring semester. Also, knowing principles of management, collaboration, and individual best practices helped me fit in to a professional workplace more easily. • ASAP Media Services • I worked for Mike Scott at ASAP for the last 2 semesters at UMaine. My professionalism and development experience were greatly enhanced through this opportunity.
I encountered some challenges along the way, so I picked up some new skills to combat them • Flexibility • Between my job offer and my first day, the business goals were constantly shifting. When I started at WEX I was not handed a list of tasks. Instead I was given the opportunity to find out what the business most needed, and do it. • Decision-making • Often I was given a task, and not told how to complete it. In these cases I got to come up with my own way to solve a problem. The biggest hurdle I faced here was deciding if I should devise a repeatable solution, or finish the task as efficiently as possible. (ie: to script, or just use manual labor)
I appreciate all of the people who helped make this happen • Gimbala Sankare (WEX Internship Coordinator) • Daryle Lamoureux (Supervisor at WEX) • Adam Hosack (Business Analyst at WEX) • Mike Scott (ASAP director) • Questions?
