ARCHITECT Eduard Riedel was born on February 1, 1813 in Bayreuth. He started to study architecture in Bayreuth then he graduated in Munich, the Bavarian capital, in 1834. Eduard’s first project was the supervision of the new development of the Ludwigstraße Damenstift in Munich (pronounced like this : lood-wig-strassa. ) This was followed by the residence and palace garden for King Otto of Greece in Athens, where he was court architect until he returned to Munich in 1850. Here he completed the propylaea jointly with Leo Von Klenze. From 1852 to 1857, Eduard was a professor at the polytendic institute. In 1853 he was appointed superintendent of the royal building authorities and in 1872 he became the leading court architect. INNOVATIONS The builders of Neuschwanstein used the latest innovations to ensure that the king had the most up-to-date technology. According to the Neuschwanstein web site, the building had hot air central heating and every floor had running water. The kitchen had both cold and hot water, and the castle's toilets were among the first with an automatic flushing system. Even the construction was done with state-of-theart tools.
