Our Mission

Important Facts to Consider � 483, 237 users visited WAPL in 2019 placing our Library in the top ten visited facilities in the State of Wisconsin � 16, 489 persons attended and participated in 373 programs offered by WAPL in 2019 �Over 500, 000 items were checked out from WAPL in 2019 � 16, 620 new items were added to the WAPL collection in 2019 � 85, 854 questions were answered by Library staff inperson, over the phone and via email in 2019 �Over 75, 000 persons used a WAPL computer in 2019

Services and Costs � WAPL provides access to: � � � � � Books – millions of traditional book titles and digital recordings Magazines – both print and digital versions DVD’s – mainstream entertainment and educational CD’s – all genres of music Streaming video and audio recordings Online database access both in-house as well as remote access Free Wireless high speed internet access Professional Librarian services Meeting Rooms and workspaces Participate in the Milwaukee County Federated Library System (15 administratively autonomous and fiscally independent public libraries in Milwaukee County) allowing access to literally millions of titles with 24 hour turnaround delivery service available to patron’s home library Associated costs for Library materials in 2020 = $250, 000 Associated costs for Library materials in 2019 = $278, 000 -$28, 000

Services and Costs � WAPL provides technical and informational assistance to users: q Computer access and high speed internet access q Job search and resume assistance q Structured computer class instruction q Free one-on-one assistance from professional librarians q Book-a-Librarian program that allows personal instruction with a librarian q Library services to homebound residents q In-person, telephone and email reference services

Services and Costs �Programming for Children, Tweens, Teens, and Adults: q Offering in-house and outreach programming q The only current suburban Library offering a Spanish language family Storytime q Proudly serve a diverse customer base q Entertaining yet educational approach q Costs are mainly staff expertise. Much of the programming material costs are covered through donations from the Friends of the West Allis Public Library (book sales), and Library trust funds

Other Variables �Library has 26. 8 FTE’s (19 are benefited) �Almost 75% of the Library budget is labor costs �WAPL is a member of the Milwaukee County Federated Library System (share resources with 15 other communities) Cost for membership = $65, 000 in 2020 (covers shared catalog system, software costs, database maintenance, digital services, and more) �Reciprocal borrowing and library services to West Milwaukee (per system contract) - revenue to the City = $210, 045 (in 2019)
