Introduction Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease. It affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die. Stroke affects >700, 000 persons per year, it is the third leading cause of death, and the leading cause of long-term disability. There are many modifiable risk factors that can help prevent a stroke.
Task Your goal is to help these patients identify their risk factors for stroke and help teach them ways to modify them. You will need to research the stroke disease process thoroughly. Once you have determined modifiable risk factors, you will determine ways to help your patients modify these risk factors.
Process • As a first step, your class will be divided into groups of four and be assigned a modifiable risk factor for stroke. Each group should meet to decide how to move forward with your presentation. Divide the questions so that each person is responsible for researching an equal number of questions. Decide what resources are available to you, and what form of presentation your group will do, Power. Point, overhead transparencies, or poster board display. • The second step is to thoroughly research your group’s modifiable risk factor for stroke. The information needed to complete your presentation can be found by searching the internet and using the resources page provided. After completing your research, discuss your findings with your group and compile the data into an educational presentation for the other members of your class. Working together as a team is vital for a professional presentation.
Resources The following resources are recommended: www. stroke. org www. strokeassociation. org http: //www. hope 4 stroke. com/43. html www. americanstroke. org http: //stroke. ahajournals. org
Evaluation • Although the webquest requires a team effort, your performance on your presentation will be graded on an individual basis. See course syllabus for grading rubric. • All electronic sources must have a working URL address • Assignments must be turned in immediately after your presentation time. • All suggestions of ways to modify stroke risk factors must be backed by research.
Conclusion Now that you have had the chance to learn more about a stroke, you probably realize how devastating a stroke can be to a patient and their family. Recognizing the most common risk factors of stroke can save a life. By now you probably realize that making small changes can make a big difference.
