Stress – the mind and body’s reaction to everyday demands and threats. Stressor – anything that causes stress. Eustress – positive stress Distress – negative stress The Stress Response Stage 1: ALARM - The stressor is present - the body enters fight or flight or freeze.
Stage 2: RESISTANCE - The body fights to regain homeostasis (the normal balanced state of the body). Stage 3: EXHAUSTION/FATIGUE : The body is too worn down to fight off the stress and is more susceptible to illness.
ILLNESS and Stress: Stress suppresses the immune system weakening it. It leaves the body vulnerable to illness. Psychosomatic Illness (Response): The mind (psycho) and body (soma) connection to illness. A physical illness as a result of mental stress. Examples: Headaches, ulcers, asthma, high blood pressure
