DEFINITION OF STRESS: Stress is your body’s natural response to a change/situation Stress affects your body: 1. Body’s physical response to a stressor: • • • Pupils of eyes widen Mouth becomes dry Muscles tighten Heartbeat rate increases Stomach feels tied up in knots
What Causes Stress? Stressor: anything that causes stress. • We all have stressors in our everyday life. However, not all stressors are the same for everyone. Some people may or may not be stressed by the same situations.
Different Kinds of Stress • Distress is Negative stress. It describes pressures in school, work, social relationships, family relationships, and the environment that are perceived as difficult or even impossible to overcome. • List 3 examples of negative stressors in your life.
Different Kinds of Stress • Distress can have a negative effect on a young person’s physical, mental, and social state and can lead to headaches, stomachaches, backaches, and other stress-related illnesses. Distress can make you frustrated or uncertain with you life.
Different Kinds of Stress • Eustress is Positive stress. It describes changes or challenges that can contribute to an individual’s growth and development. • List 3 examples of positive stressors in your life.
Different Kinds of Stress • Positive stress can improve overall performance and leads to a higher self-esteem and self confidence. Positive stress can give you energy, make life fun, and challenge you.
Stress Response • Stage 1 is the ALARM stage. • Fight or Flight. During this stage, the body is much more susceptible to disease or injury. Because it’s geared up to deal with crisis. Health Maintenance is not a priority.
Stage 2 - Resistance If you adapt to stress effectively, if stress continues, your body adapts and allows us to cope with busy life. (live with war, disease, disability, and dysfunction. )
Stage 3 – Exhaustion Maintaining balance during the resistance stage requires a lot of energy. If stress is unresolved, exhaustion sets in.
After awhile, stress can affect your cardiovascular system and immune system. • Cardiovascular disease. (Heart attacks, high blood pressure, stroke) • Immune System: Becomes weak. You pick up every little bug that passes your way! • Insomnia, fatigue, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, headaches, diarrhea, constipation, ulcers, are all related to STRESS!!!
Some questions to think about…. . 1. How does stress relate to our health? 2. Why do we need to learn about stress? 3. What’s the role of stress and its relationship to disease? Can Stress really cause disease?
