Street Art People have been drawing on rocks
Street Art
People have been drawing on rocks or walls for thousands of years. This is one of the earliest forms of communication known to man. The petroglyphs we see in Arizona are evidence of how Native American people communicated important ideas with each other long before paper was available to them. Today, people still communicate their ideas by painting on buildings, train cars, or other surfaces.
Sometimes the art is done very well, and the owner of the property is happy to have it there. On the other hand, sometimes people deface other people’s property, which is destructive and disrespectful
When someone destroys the property of others (even if it is public property) by defacing it with paint or markers, we usually call this “tagging”. Typically, these people are interested in leaving their “mark”, at the expense of everyone else who lives in that environment. Some graffiti artists are skilled and have powerful messages they want to communicate to the public. Their art is typically much better. Sometimes their street art is appreciated by those who see it, sometimes it is not.
