Changes to the school day To allow for increased social distancing and less congestion, the following changes have been made: • Staggered start S 4 -S 6 8. 50 am S 1 -S 3 9. 00 am • No registration at start of the day – go straight to period 1 • Split interval and lunch Group 1 – S 1, S 3, S 4 Group 2 – S 2, S 5, S 6 • Tutor time (15 mins) between periods 2 and 3 • Last period of the day 45 minutes

Interval/Lunch arrangements • As much as possible, year groups will be kept separate during interval and lunchtime by allocating different indoor and outdoor spaces • Please spend most of your break and lunchtime outdoors • Bring an appropriate outdoor jacket to school • No pupil is permitted to leave the school grounds at interval • S 1 pupils are not allowed to leave the school grounds at lunchtime for the first few weeks. Mrs Kane will decide when this will change.

Staying in school for lunchtime: • Snacks/packed lunches can be brought from home • Food can be purchased from the cafeteria using your Young Scot Card (make sure your parents/carers top this up with money through Parent Pay) • Download the new Fusion Mobile App to pre-order your food This will save you having to queue! • An email containing your personal code has been sent to your Glow account • Menus will be published weekly

Going out of school at lunchtime: • S 2 -S 6 who choose to leave the school grounds during lunchtime must adhere to the Scottish Government guidelines to help protect our wider community, including wearing face coverings in shops/food outlets. • When you are not wearing your face covering it should be placed inside a plastic bag • Local food suppliers and shops have implemented strategies which allow them to safely serve pupils • We expect all pupils to follow these measures and behave in a responsible manner. • Food purchased outside of the school cannot be brought back into the school building.

Physical distancing • Respect people’s physical space • Maintain distance where possible • Stay 2 m away from adults X • Hugging • Hand-to-hand contact • Touching

Hygiene Reduce your risk of getting and spreading the infection by: • maintaining good hand hygiene • covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing • cleaning surfaces regularly X • not touching your eyes, nose and mouth • not using someone else’s personal items such as their mobile phone

Clean hands • Sanitise your hands when you enter and leave the building • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water, especially before eating or after using the toilet • Sanitise your hands when you enter and leave the classroom • Stations are also in place in common areas, for example the Street

Coughing and sneezing

Entry and Exit • Enter and exit the building by the door that is nearest the classroom you are going to or leaving • Sanitise your hands every time you enter the building • Wait patiently if there is a queue and observe physical distancing

Movement around school • You must follow the new Movement Around The School strategy to support the flow of pupils across the school • Rules will include keeping left in the corridors and stairwells • At all times you must follow signs and instructions from staff • You should avoid physical contact with other young people. You must keep 2 m distance away from school staff and all other adults in school • Do not use the lift unless you have a medical pass

In the classroom (1) Hand sanitisation stations are available in every classroom You must use hand sanitiser as you enter and leave the room You should sit side by side, facing forwards where possible You should have your own workspace in each class and you should avoid moving around the classroom • You should wipe down your desk and chair before and after use • Please use the bins with lids in every classroom to dispose of tissues. Wipes can be disposed of in normal bins • •

In the classroom (2) • You must keep your bags on the floor. Do not put them on your desk • You can bring a small amount of your own stationery to school but you should not share any personal belongings with others • Avoid the sharing of central resources between pupils during lessons • Any resources (such as textbooks/P. E. equipment/IT equipment/Musical instruments/Art equipment) that are used or are taken home should be wiped down before being reused

In the classroom (3) • Teachers have implemented systems for the safe management of school resources (textbooks etc. ) • Arrangements are in place for the safe issue and return of library books • Singing and playing of wind/brass instruments should be avoided, for the moment • In the initial stages, there may be limited practical work in Home Economics, Design and Technology and Science. Practical activities will resume once we can be sure that it is safe to do so.

Tutor time • Registration has been replaced by tutor time and is timetabled before or after interval each day • Pupils will be grouped according to their allocated register classes • Tutor time will be used to pass on information, check attendance records etc. • We will continue to have designated days for personal reading

Physical Education • PE lessons will be outdoors until government guidance permits the use of indoor facilities • It is essential that students have appropriate clothing (hoodie/sweatshirt/waterproof jacket/change of shoes) • If you have practical PE activities period 1, you may wear appropriate kit (including black Strathaven Academy PE t-shirt) to minimise the need to use changing rooms • If PE is timetabled for the last period of the school day, you do not need to change and should leave in your sportswear • PE staff have plans in place to maximise the spaces available for students to change and leave their belongings. These areas will also be cleaned regularly.

Uniform and personal items • School uniform should be worn as normal. This includes: Blazer, school tie, black trousers or skirt, white shirt, plain black jumper/cardigan and appropriate black footwear. • Current government guidance is that school uniform should be washed as normal • Any uniform concerns should be discussed with your guidance teacher • All pupils should bring a bag to school and have all the necessary school equipment required. Do not share your personal equipment with others • For the time being, pupil lockers will not be in use • Pupils should carry their personal belongings with them at all times • You will have the opportunity to empty your locker during the induction day

Toilets • Pupils must only use the toilets in the Street Area or PE changing rooms. Do not use the accessible toilets located in corridors. • Toilets will be monitored by staff to support physical distancing • Toilets will be cleaned regularly throughout the school day • Every second sink will be taped off • Where possible, toilet facilities should only be used during interval and lunch • If you need to leave the class to visit the toilet, you must use sanitiser gel when you leave, wash and dry your hands thoroughly in the bathroom and use sanitiser gel again when you return to the classroom.

Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) • Young people are not required to wear a suitable face covering in school or on school contract buses but may choose to do so • Some staff may wish to wear a face covering when they are in busy areas and unable to maintain a 2 m distance from young people • Staff who work closely with young people for more than 15 minutes should wear a face covering • Young people must wear an appropriate face covering if using public transport to journey to and from school and when using any of the local shops • PPE (apron, gloves, and face mask/visor) will be worn by First Aid staff who are responding to a young person or member of staff who is displaying any medical symptoms, including COVID-19

Covid-19 symptoms • The whole school community should be vigilant for the symptoms of COVID-19, and to understand what actions should be taken if someone develops them, either in school or out of school • All young people and staff must inform a member of staff or responsible person if they feel unwell with symptoms of COVID-19 - temperature - persistent cough - loss of taste or smell • Pupils must not go home without informing the school office

Attendance • All pupils are expected to attend school as normal unless given advice from a GP or healthcare provider not to • Parents/carers must contact the school by telephone or email before 9 am to inform us of their child’s absence – indicating the reason for absence • In a change to procedures, pupils will not be required to provide their registration teacher with a written note when they return to school following an absence • All communication must be via phone or email to the school office • The office should also be informed by parents if pupils require to leave school to attend an appointment etc • Where no information is provided, absences will be considered to be unexplained and therefore recorded as unauthorised • Guidance teachers will contact parents if they have concerns about attendance • Sixth year pupils who are not timetabled for class during periods 1 and 2 should remain at home, if possible, until tutor time at 10. 30 am

School transport (1) • It is not necessary to maintain distance between young people who are travelling on designated school buses and taxis • If travelling by public transport, you must wear a face covering and adhere to physical distancing rules • Pupils must not board dedicated school or public transport if they, or a member of their household, have symptoms of COVID-19 • Bus operators are not required to provide hand sanitiser on vehicles so please carry your own supply for use prior to boarding transport • Bus operators are required to carry out regular cleaning and sanitising of their vehicles

School transport (2) • Where possible, you should walk or cycle to school • For those who need to travel by car, parents/carers are asked to avoid entering Bowling Green Road to minimise traffic congestion • Parents/carers are encouraged to park further away from the school and use the drop-off points detailed below: Station Road Common Green Woodhill Road • Parents/carers should avoid entering the school car parks • Parents/carers should not provide transport for young people from another household. • Pupils should aim to arrive at school for the designated start time as there will be no access to the building before this time

After school/lunchtime clubs • For the time being there will be no after school or lunchtime clubs • This will be reviewed at a later date and safety guidance will be followed

Behaviour • Our school values of Responsible, Respectful and Resilient are key as we all work together to help keep us all safe and support the successful reopening of Strathaven Academy • Please follow all instructions as they are necessary to ensure everyone is safe • Behave responsibly and respectfully in school and when you are in the community • Anyone who does not follow rules will be dealt with severely and parents/carers will be contacted

Supporting wellbeing • The health and wellbeing of pupils and staff at Strathaven Academy is a priority • Some people may feel anxious about returning to school • Please speak to your guidance teacher if you have any concerns
