Examining a Firm’s Competitive Environment: Porter’s Five Forces • Michael Porter’s Five forces (the Industry and Competitive Analysis): this framework considers five major forces essential to analyze a business • From Porter: “analyzing [these] forces illuminates an industry’s fundamental attractiveness, exposes the underlying drivers of average industry profitability, and provides insight into how profitability will evolve in the future. ” • The Forces: 1. the intensity of rivalry among existing competitors 2. the threat of new entrants 3. the threat of substitute goods or services 4. the bargaining power of buyers 5. the bargaining power of suppliers

Activity: Using Porter’s Five Forces • Example of an Analysis of Starbucks with Prezi (don’t do Starbucks but please follow this example) • Get in Groups of 3 to 5 people • From a technology angle, choose a company or industry to analyze using the lens of the Five Forces Model (e. g. , how the newspaper industry or music industry is being impacted by tech) • Make a Power. Point, Google Slides, or Prezi Presentation with the following information: 1. What Are Porter’s Five Forces (with a one or two sentence definition for each one) 2. An brief overview of the industry or company you are analyzing 3. Justification for why this company/industry needs to be analyzed? 4. A slide or two ranking of the intensity of rivalry among existing competitors and an explanation about the ranking (see example) 5. A slide or two ranking of the threat of new entrants and an explanation (see example) 6. A slide or two ranking of the threat of substitute goods or services and an explanation (see example) 7.
