Strategic Leadership Proper Facilitation and Building Consensus in
Strategic Leadership Proper Facilitation and Building Consensus in Multiple Environments! “If you can’t sell it, you can’t lead!” Ted A. Rogers
“Great Leaders are almost always great simplifiers!” General Colin Powell
“Fear” Your Fear must be managed and confronted. What do you Fear? Failure? Resistance? Your crew can sense and smell Fear much like an animal can. How can you release your Fear?
“Focus” “Your Focus needs more Focus!” How is your Focus directed? Is this your Focus or others’ Focus? How do you present your Focus to others?
“Strategy or Tactics or Task? ” Strategy is the plan of action. Tactics is how the plan will be carried out. Task is who will produce the end result.
“The Three Pillar Assessment” Leadership is the first Pillar. All things begin and end with Leadership! The Leader will share the credit or shoulder the blame.
“The Three Pillar Assessment” Training is the second Pillar. The crew must be properly trained. The crew must be adequately prepared. The crew must be of “one accord. ”
“The Three Pillar Assessment” Resources are third Pillar. The crew must be adequately equipped. The crew must be adequately supported and re-supplied. The crew must have redundancy.
“Succession” “The greatest use of my life is to spend it in something that will outlast it. ” Steve Haley “If your not careful, the urgent will crowd out the important. ” James S. Netherton Who is “in the wings” to Lead after you? This is single mission driven and long term replacement!
“Leading Out” “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. ” Edmund Burke The best use of your Leadership power is to “do good” and “make wrongs right!” Ted Rogers “It is never about who is in charge but rather who is responsible. Therein lies true accountability!” Ted Rogers
“Visionary Assessment” Is this really what I see or can I look past this and see what I am supposed to see? “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty. Mother Teresa
“People are often unreasonable, illogical and selfcentered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives, be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you’ve got anyway. ” Dr. Kent Keith
“Timing and Motivation” Time is constant and will pressure you in Leadership decisions. Be sensitive to timing! Timing can be your enemy or your friend. The Leader’s level of motivation is critical! The crew will do what you do, every time.
“Believe” “Faith is the purposeful suspension of critical thinking. ” Bill Maher If you don’t have faith, who will? Would you follow you? Strategic Leadership is about putting the many pieces together in such a way that they provide a harmonic balance.
“The Conductor” The Leader of the symphony orchestra must turn his back on the world in order to focus on his crew and make music and therefore “magic. ” The question then becomes; “can you tune out the noise? ”
“The Purchase” The crew “buys” the leader before they “buy” the mission assignment; every time. This of course is similar to the sales environment. What we fail to clearly understand is that the application of Strategic Leadership is in effect, a sales job, a sales pitch!
“What or Who? ” “One of the most elementary fundamentals of successful, effective leadership is not what you are, but rather who you are!” Ted Rogers Character is the very fiber of your strength. A Strategic Leader is a Coach and Counselor!
“Commander or Companion? ” If you are in this together, in other words, a Companion, then you are also able to earn the right to be the Commander. Similar to breakfast, the chicken is involved but the pig is committed! Mutual Ownership builds successful Strategic Leadership!
“Is your crew Audible? ” Can you effectively call a different strategy out of nowhere and your crew adapt and follow the new play? All good crews are Audible? Able to adjust quickly. Remember to trust, but verify.
Develop and train Leaders; not those who just follow policy; they must have critical thinking skills. Many times, the Strategic Leader is faced with how to adopt the policy to the mission, not the other way around as one would presume. “It is never about the rule, but rather the intent of the rule; what is the intended spirit of what needs to be done. ” Ted Rogers
“Super Stars? ” “Your goal as a Strategic Leader is to build, coach, and teach the crew to the point that they build themselves a team of and feel like Superstars!” Ted Rogers What are the secrets to this phrase?
Build Yourself! Three questions the Strategic Leader can do to improve as suggested by Shaun Rein; 1. Question yourself! 2. Listen to and talk with folks who think you are wrong! 3. Change perspective and recharge!
The Burden “At the end of the day, Leadership is a burden. It can be very lonely, not at the top as one might presume, but at the bottom. If you are truly the Strategic Leader that you should have become, you have descended to the point where you feel the weight of the crew that you are carrying. Only then have you the ability to see your decisions through the eyes of your crew, predict the outcome of your decisions, and indeed celebrate the successful mission the crew completes. ” Ted Rogers
“Power Types” Legitimate – positional, rank, authority. Reward – able to improve work environment. Coercive – can and will punish where needed. Referent – emulate, or duplicate you. Expert – having knowledge, skills, competent.
“Power in Context” “Rank does not give Power or Privilege, it is an imposition of Responsibility. ” Dr. Peter Drucker
“The Strangest Thing” “The day you realize that while you may be in charge, but your really just responsible…is the day your leadership potential will explode!” “Your ability to focus on your responsibilities and not your power, enables you to grow and most certainly lead!”
“What is Rank? ” Your rank or position is really just a definition of your responsibilities. If you have more rank, you have simply more responsibilities. Go back to the “burden” and realize that if your at the top, your really at the bottom!
Leadership Character Approachable Influence Confront Passion!
“The Environment” The crew will act like you do. The crew will perform the way you expect them to if you have told them and given clear goals. The crew will be “you” in spite of what you tell them.
“Gandhi said” “You must be the change you want to see in others!”
“We end where we began” Value Simplicity!
Thank you…go forth and lead the way you would want to be led!
