History of Strap & Snap • Developed by the Family Medicine Center (Fort Collins, CO) in 1998 • Now coordinated by Safe Kids Larimer County (Colorado) • Geared toward 3 rd grade students • 45 - 60 minute interactive presentation • Educated over 20, 000 students since program inception

Presentation Eddy the Egg: • Introduce Eddy and explain how he is similar to our skull and brain • Tell a story about how Eddy went outside to ride his bike without his helmet and he fell off…and drop Eddy in a bowl. • Let kids see Eddy’s brain and skull • Put another version of Eddy in the egg helmet and drop him on the floor. • HE SURVIVED! (most of the time)
Presentation How to Wear a Helmet: • Straight • Strap • Snug • Snap Wrap-up & Review: • Go over hand signals and scenarios they could encounter. • Explain the pledge and that teachers will distribute.
Equipment & Materials • Flashdrive, computer & projector or Smart. Board • 1 -2 eggs (raw) • Egg helmet (Styrofoam pieces with rubber band, or custom-made helmet for egg) • Bike Helmet (to take apart) • Bike Helmet (that fits the presenter’s head) • Jell-O Brain • Posters of athletes wearing helmets (football, baseball, hockey, cyclist, etc. ) • Dinner plate • “Mr. Bones” skull • Video and VCR/DVD player (provided by the school) for video (*Optional if not using flashdrive)
Where To Get Materials • Bike/Helmet Safety Statistics – Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, CDC, Safe Kids, www. helmets. org, etc. • Bike Safety Videos– NHTSA, Safe Kids, www. You. Tube. com, etc. • Egg Helmet- Styrofoam pieces with rubber band, or custom-made with cast material and Velcro straps • Bike Helmets & Posters– ask for donations from local stores • Jell-O Brain Molds– various internet sites (roughly $12) • Skull Model– various internet sites (roughly $130)
