Language-Objective: Students will use Scratch to create a simple block programming language program that is performing special effects with the letters of their first name.

Today’s Module and Activity are Scratch (Block) Programming Scratch Lab 1: Your Name Animated

Activity Instructions (1) “Using Scratch Program create a simple Scratch program that performs special effects with the letters of your first name. ” Steps to accomplish to complete activity 1. Start Scratch 2 program (on desktop) 2. Click on “new sprite” face icon to add sprites from library 3. Choose “letters” from library options on left side. 4. One at a time select all of the letters of your first name. 5. Delete cat sprite (Sprite 1) from scene. 6. After all letters are in scene click on one letter in “sprites” listing area and then “scripts” options window in top right.

Activity Instructions (2) “Scratch Program create effects on the letters of your first name. ” 7. Click on “events” options and choose top “When clicked” option and drag it to the right side. 8. Click on “motion” options and select a motion. 9. Drag motion block to right side and connect it to the bottom of “when clicked” block. 10. Repeat steps 3 through 9 until all the letters of your name have motion blocks in script area. 11. Test program by clicking on “green “flag” icon above scene window displaying sprites. 12. Add on to motion blocks for each letter and see what happens to your name. 13. Get a Windows Snipping tool clip of Scratch scene and submit this in Canvas for grading.

Starting Scratch “Click on Scratch 2 Desktop Icon”

Locate “New sprite” near middle towards bottom of Scratch window. Click on Face icon to add new sprites

Choose Letters from Category options in Sprite Library (upper left corner)

Add the letters that make up your first name to sprites in Scratch

Repeat until all the letters needed are in Scratch scene window

Click on Cat Sprite (sprite 1) in Sprites window (not scene) and right-mouse select “delete” to delete cat sprite from scene.

Sprite Action Step 1 Click on a letter of your first name in sprites window.

Sprite Action Step 2 Locate “Scripts” window on right side of Scratch program screen.

Sprite Action Step 3 Click on “Events” icon in Scripts options area and select top option “When Clicked” and drag it to the right script program window area

Sprite Action Step 4 Click on “Motion” icon in Scripts options area and select one of the options and then drag it to the script program window area and connect it to the bottom of the “When clicked” block.

Sprite Action Step 5 Repeat Sprite Action steps 1 through 24 until all of the letters of your first name have motion blocks.

Sprite Action Step 6 Click on “Start Flag” and see what your name sprites do?

Sprite Action Step 7 Experiment adding blocks to each letter sprite script then repeat Sprite Action Step 6

Scratch Program Capture Use the “Windows Snipping Tool” Located in programs, Windows Accessories to capture the screen of your Scratch name program.

Select “File”, “Save As” to name your Scratch Program Screen Capture

Name Scratch Click “Submit Assignment” and submit window snip of Scratch name program.
