What is a Podcast? • A combination of the words i. Pod and broadcasting (Vodcasting = video ipod broadcasting). • Podcasting is a method of publishing files to the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed and receive new files automatically by subscription. • A podcast is RSS content that you’ve subscribed to and is delivered via the Internet. • A “podcatcher” program such as i. Tunes is then used to display the podcast; content aggregator

Do I need an i. Pod to Podcast? • No, you do not need an i. Pod to Podcast or even use i. Tunes. • All podcast files are encoded as mp 3 files, the most universal format for listening on various devices. • You can listen to each podcast using almost any computer application: – i. Tunes automatically subscribes to the Podcast. – Media Player, Real Audio Player, Win. Amp, and many others. – You can download and burn mp 3 files to a CD so you can listen in your car or at home on your stereo. – Transfer mp 3 files to any portable media device like the i. Pod or other mp 3 players - even mobile phones.

What is the advantage of Podcasting? • You can listen a program during a time and at a place most convenient for you. • You can selectively subscribe to audio and video. • Media is automatically delivered. • “Casting” deliverable media for convenience.

What Podcasting Isn’t • It is not simply a web-based audio, or web site to downloadable media For example, Dr. G’s RSS feed http: //homework. sdmesa. edu/dgergens/podcasts/gergens_podcast_code. xml Katie Couric’s Notebook http: //westwoodone. com/pg/jsp/katiecouric/audio. jsp; jsessionid • http: //homework. sdmesa. edu/dgergens/podcasts/view_podcast. mov
