Dating Violence (or relationship abuse) is a pattern of violent behavior that someone uses against a boyfriend or girlfriend. Dating Violence

1 in 3 teenagers report knowing someone who has been hit, kicked, punched, slapped, choked, or physically hurt by their partner. Dating Violence

Follow these steps to help STOP Dating Violence. 1. Know the early warning signs of a dating situation or relationship that could have the potential to become violent. 2. If you are in a violent or potentially violent relationship make a safety plan and get help. If you want to stay in the relationship, realize that the violence will not just stop or go away. 3. Be aware of friends that may be in violent dating situations or relationships. 4. Take action if you suspect that someone you know is being abused. 5. If you are hurting someone else, have the courage to get help! Dating Violence

If you know a friend or family member has been abused, follow these tips when talking to him/her: • Don’t be afraid to let him/her know that you are concerned for their safety. • Acknowledge that he/she is in a very difficult and scary situation. • Be supportive. • Be non-judgmental. • Encourage him/her to participate in activities outside of the relationship with friends and family. • If he/she ends the relationship, continue to be supportive of them. • Help him/her to develop a safety plan. • Encourage him/her to talk to people who can provide guidance. • Remember that you cannot “rescue” him/her.
