§ Animal cruelty is a rising problem that has been going on for decades all over the world. Many investigations expose these incidents for everyone to be aware of how serious this issue truly is. § There are statistics based on the media reports related to animal cruelty cases that have revealed Around 1, 880 animal abuse cases were reported in 2007. § Dogs were involved in 1, 212 of these animal cruelty cases. § Similarly 377 cats and over 470 other animal species were reported to have suffered some sort of cruelty that year. § Overall, we need to educate people about these forms of animal cruelty that occur in Factory farms, in family homes, dog markets and in testing labs. The more educated people are about these forms of the abuse, the more likely we are to reduce this violence from occurring
§ Shocking to most people, dog meat trades are common over seas. These dogs experience abuse in terrible ways § According to the Animal Welfare Institute. “…Dogs who are killed may be subjected to extreme fear and suffer agonizing deaths via bludgeoning, hanging, or electrocution. At the open-air dog markets, dogs are often electrocuted and their necks are broken-all in plain sight to people who pass by and the other dogs. ” § There are nearly 20 million dogs that are consumed a year in China and around 1. 5 million in South Korea.
§ Factory farms show some of the most atrocious forms of animal abuse worldwide involving cows, pigs, chickens and other livestock. § These animals are improperly cared for, inhumanely caged, and ultimately, slaughtered. According to “The Animal Voice Magazine: Dog Markets and Factory farms” written by Brenda Shoss describes that these animals go through, “…neglect, mutilation, genetic manipulation and drug regimens that cause chronic pain and crippling, the livestock is also transported through all weather extremes that ends in a gruesome, violent slaughter. ” § Most livestock are fed improper foods that contain steroids to cause more production of body fat, this helping to create more production for meat. This can be very painful for the animals and cause issues with being able to hold themselves up. § Livestock only experience life being crowded by others, scared and in pain. In fact, many of these animals are proven to be very intelligent creatures and are able to experience pain and mental distress similar to humans. § Most of these animals go insane from boredom and lack of socialization among others, causing many long term, harmful issues to these animals mentally and physically.
§ These common crimes often happen in numerous homes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Neglect- where people do not provide adequate care for animals. Affirmative Acts of Abuse- Intentional actions meant to injure or kill an animal. Animal fighting-When animals are trained to fight, “bait” animals are and are often mauled or killed in the process. Abandonment- when an animal is left behind by his guardian. Bestiality- any sexual crime against an animal § Many of these cases end in permanent damage or death to the victimized animal. Incidents like this physically and mentally provoke these animals causing fear and trauma to innocent creatures. § Another example of animal cruelty is animal hoarding this form of cruelty is when an owner has more than the typical amount of animals and the owners lack the inability to provide minimal standards of nutrition, sanitation, shelter, and veterinary care. Such neglect often results in starvation, illness and death.
§ Over 115 million animals – mice, rats, dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, birds, among others – are killed in laboratory experiments worldwide for chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing every year. § LCA (Last Chance for Animals) exposed a case where lab workers were accused and caught on footage of, “animals thrown, slammed, suspended by their ears or limbs, and struck with such force that the impact could be heard on the recording. ” § Animals were left in inadequate living conditions and had numerous injuries that haven’t been treated. § Many animals were in distress due to the lack of socialization and being able to move around because of being locked up in small, wired cages. § This video I am about to present reveals various clips of animals being set up for tests in uncomfortable machines, IV’s painfully inserted as well as tubes being forced down their throats for them to ingest toxic substances and thrown back into their cages as the symptoms of the test start to kick in. § The investigator confirmed that after the tests were conducted the animals were killed.

§ EMBO Reports discuss that some people argue that animal testing is beneficial to biomedical research and advances our knowledge on the use of drugs for diseases, etc. § Arguing that if people were to abandon animal testing and try to abolish the use of animal testing it would cause severe consequences for public health. § Indian Journal of Pharmaceutical Science provides that an organization PETA has created alternative strategies such as using stem cells, DNA chips, micro fluidics, computer analysis models , etc. that could be used in the place of animals § Evidence reveals that experiments that involve animals aren’t always effective in revealing results that scientist were looking for. § These alternatives can prevent one less form of animal cruelty from occurring and can be just as helpful to research.
§ Thousands upon thousands of animals are abused and killed every year in these similar cases. The laws and regulations that are set to these certain environments like factory farms and lab testing only set minimum standards of care, therefore there is not structure to reducing the violence at hand. This is where education needs to be improved in order to see a change in behavior and have more laws enacted to protect animal rights and provide adequate living conditions and to treat them as humane as possible § There are numerous ways organizations such as SPCA or Humane Society have provided information and ways to guide people in the direction of helping these animals so they are able to live a better life than what they have been through.
