The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 33 -41 Page 956 - Jesus is talking to the chief priest and elders of the people (v. 23) - He is telling them a parable – story with a point - A landlord plants a vineyard
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 33 -41 Page 956 - In the Old Testament, vineyards were often used to symbolize Israel. - He rented it out to some farmers - They would have given him a share of the harvest
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 33 -41 Page 956 - Harvest time comes - Servants – beat, killed stoned - He sends more servants – treated the same way - Sends his son – thinking they will respect him
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 33 -41 Page 956 - They somehow think they’ll get his inheritance if he’s not around - So they throw him out and kill him. (v. 39) - What’s the owner going to do?
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 33 -41 Page 957 - “Bring those wretches to a wretched end” (v. 41) – he’ll have them killed in align with their hearts. - Then he’ll rent the vineyard to people that will share/give.
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 42 -46 Page 957 - Jesus “Have you not read in the scriptures” - to theologians - “The stone the builders rejected” – if the stone was not perfect it would throw off the rest of the build
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 42 -46 Page 957 - “has become the cornerstone” – all other stones are set in reference to the cornerstone. - Quote from Psalm 118: 21 -22 - “The Lord (God) has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. ”
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 42 -46 Page 957 - Chief priest, elders – the Kingdom will be taken from you and given to people that will produce fruit. - You wanted control, now it will be taken away
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 42 -46 Page 957 - They forgot they were tenants - “anyone who falls on this stone” (v. 44) – the cornerstone – Jesus – anyone who humbles themselves – will find the brokenness they need
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 42 -46 Page 957 - “anyone on whom it falls will be crushed” – Judgment in the end. - They knew Jesus was talking about them. - Two options for response
The Cornerstone Matthew 21: 42 -46 Page 957 - Humility or vengeance - “looked for a way to arrest him”(v. 46) – put their hands on him - But they were afraid of the crowd – not Jesus (God)
Response - What about your view of Jesus needs to change? - Where do you need to surrender control to Jesus?
