Stone Cold Year 8 | English Homework Tasks | Term: Spring 2 | Topic: Modern Text: Stone Cold by Robert Swindells Instructions: Each week you will complete one piece of homework. This will be either one of the activities below, or revision from your Knowledge Organiser for a test in class. Your teacher will let you know what homework activity you are doing and when this should be handed in. 1. Descriptive Writing: Imagine you are Link arriving in London for the first time. 2. Storyboard: Create a storyboard to show the challenges of a day in the life of a homeless person. Draw images, cut out pictures from newspapers/magazines or use the library rooms to print off images. Beneath each image write a descriptive sentence. Write 3 paragraphs describing your arrival. You could include: 1. Stepping off the train and what you can see and hear. 2. Walking through London for the first time. 3. Your thoughts and feelings about this new place. 4. Three methods from your knowledge organiser. Make sure you include a five part plan. Due Date: Use your knowledge of Stone Cold to make this realistic. Think carefully about setting. You must include: • • • Waking up and being moved on by the police Trying to find somewhere to wash Begging for money to buy some food Due Date: Don’t forget to check your spellings and word choice by using your Gem when completing your homework. Checking Understanding Answer the questions below in full sentences and in as much detail as possible. Explain your answer and support your response with references from the text. 1. What do you think is going to happen in Stone Cold? 2. How does Robert Swindells make the reader feel sympathetic towards Link? 3. Why do you think Robert Swindells wrote Stone Cold as a duel narrative? What is the purpose of Shelter’s narrative? 4. Why do you think Robert Swindells chose to write a novel about homelessness? Consider the context of Stone Cold. 4. Diary Entry Write a diary entry from Link’s perspective on the events that have happened so far in Stone Cold. Remember to include his thoughts and feelings on these events. Use your knowledge organiser to help you with the plot so far. Due Date: You should use: • A range of punctuation • A range of ambitious vocabulary from your Knowledge Organiser. • Three language methods from your Knowledge Organiser.
