STΣM RESPONSE TEAM An Introduction to Biomes
What is a Biome? A biome is a natural area of plants and animals. The world is divided into lots of different biomes and they are all different depending on their climate.
On a piece of paper, brain storm as many different biomes that you can think of!
Types of Biome Aquatic Largest biome, covering nearly 75% of the entire planet. Can be either freshwater or marine. Desert Extremely harsh dry areas which are usually hot, but can also be cold. Covers 20% of the planet’s surface.
Types of Biome Boreal Forest Evergreen expanses of forest in the northern hemisphere, covering 11% of the Earth’s surface. Deciduous Forest These forests loose and regain their leaves dependant on the season. Covers 13% of the Earth.
Types of Biome Grassland Large area of short or long grasses with very few trees and other plants. Covers around 10% of the Earth. Rainforest Tropical forests which are warm all year round. They cover 6% of the Earth’s surface.
Types of Biome Savanna Grassy plains in tropic regions, with a few trees. They cover 20% of the Earth’s surface. Tundra One of the coldest biomes; vast, flat, and treeless. Soil is permanently frozen. Covers 20% of the Earth’s surface.
Types of Biome Activity: Using the interactive map on the next slide, try and colour the biomes on your worksheet. Challenge: On your worksheet, label some animals which you think might live in each biome! With the help of an adult, research your answers online to see if you are correct.
Click the buttons to make each biome appear. Click again to remove. boreal/taiga forest rainforest grassland desert deciduous forest savannah tundra ice
. Super Challenge Activity: Draw a pie chart showing how much of the Earth’s surface is covered by each biome. Psst… you’ll need a ruler! 20% Example 20% 11% 6% 13%
