STITCHES There are different types of stitches used in sewing. – Can you name any stitches? – How can stitches be divided?
STITCHES Decorative Temporary Permanent
TEMPORARY STITCHES • Stitches which are intended to be removed. • After pinning, temporary stitches are used to hold fabric in place before machine-stitching. • Called tacking or basting. • Worked using tacking thread (weaker, easier to remove). • Have other uses eg: for gathering, to mark fabric.
TEMPORARY STITCHES Even Tacking • Stitches are the same distance apart. Uneven Tacking • Stitches are not even. • Alternating between long and short stitches.
TEMPORARY STITCHES Diagonal Tacking • Stitching from top to bottom to form a diagonal pattern. • Used to hold fabric layers together (eg: for pleats not to move)
TEMPORARY STITCHES Tailor’s Tacking • Loopy stitches used to mark fabrics. • When loops are cut between layers of fabric, the remaining stitches will serve as marks eg: marking buttons, darts etc.
PERMANENT STITCHES • Stitches which are intended to stay in place. • Stronger thread is used. • Can be sewn by hand or machine. • Can be functional or decorative.
PERMANENT STITCHES Can you name some examples of permanent stitches?
DECORATIVE STITCHES • Are also permanent stitches but their use is to add a decorative effect on fabric. • Can be sewn by hand or using an embroidery machine. Can you name some examples of decorative/embroidery stitches?
