Stills and Movement
Stills and Movement We are all familiar with the use of still images in films As photographs Flashbacks Scene of crime Family shots All usually reflecting on an event or past time
Stills and Movement A still in a film has a role Often this is used to convey ‘Exposition’ Exposition is a way of giving information, can be dialogue based and also image based However, films both narrative and art based can make use of still images in a much broader and definitive way.
Stills and Movement Probably the most famous example of a film made using (almost) entirely of still images is Chris Markers 1962 film La Jetee, 28 minutes
Stills and Movement La Jetee tells a traditional narrative Sci Fi tale making use of still images, it comprises of a range of traditional storytelling techniques: Flashback Narration Romance Mystery Time travel
Stills and Movement Very influential and Formed the basis for Terry Gilliams movie 12 Monkeys
Stills and Movement The influence of La Jetee can be seen right up to today. Pays ‘Homage’ to La Jetee Award winning True to the original 13 minutes
Stills and Movement There are other films that make use of stills only, often seen as more ‘Art House’ but no less important to what we wish to achieve.
Stills and Movement Remember these images?
Stills and Movement All from the short film F. Stop Directed by Ian Beck Mbfilms. co. uk Also comprising only of stills However, Sound is equally important even when subtly used it is used well.
Stills and Movement There are other more avant garde techniques that can also be sued to convey an impression or concept rather than a traditional narrative Whirr by Timo Katz
Stills and Movement Whirr (2006) In this short subject, filmmaker Timo Katz uses advanced photographic techniques to document the numbing sameness of suburban architecture. In Whirr, what appears to be a tracking shot is comprised of images from a number of different homes which look strikingly similar in this context.
Stills The final project is one based on making a short film that comprises only of still images. The kind of film is up to you, experimental or narrative Remember how important sound is and can be in film and photography.
Stills or Moving images? Photography students who have not made a video before can make a film using video/moving images. MP students who have made a video before using moving images can only make a film using still images.
Stills and Moving images Be as creative and imaginative as you like. Theme is up to you Content is up to you Location is up to you Style is up to you Lets look at some examples…. (La Jetee we will look at later)
