Q & A 1. What did Barney hear and see in the pit? Barney heard voices coming from the bottom of the pit. There were three boys of about his own age or older dressed in grabby jerseys and trousers. 2. What were they doing? They were building a shack for themselves out of dead branches and old sheets of iron. 3. Describe the Snargets in your own words. They are mean, thin, dirty, smelly, tough on the outside but soft inside. In the end, they turned to be good friends. 4. Who do you think Albert is? Barney

5. What were the Snargets doing inside the shack before they all walked away? They hid a tin full of junk screws, nuts, bolts and curtain rings under the ground. 6. Would you have gone into the shack if you were Barney? No, it was obviously a trap. 7. Did the Snargets believe that Stig was real? No, they didn’t. 8. How did Barney describe Stig? A caveman. 9. Why did Barney suddenly feel sorry for the Snargets once he had gone into Stig’s cave? Because Stig had a club out of tree root in his hand he knew that Stig would be beating them with it if they come into the den.

10. Why didn’t Stig move back when Barney did? He was defending his den. 11. Why do you think Stig took the young Snarget to his den after he had fallen? He wanted to make sure that he was fine. 12. What did the “white flag” mean? It meant truce, peace and surrender. 13. What did Stig do with his cigarette? Stig ate his cigarette up.

14. Why do you think Barney wasn’t sure whether to have a cigarette? It was not right for children to smoke cigarettes. 15. What did the Snargets do to prove they would not tell the secret to anyone? They all swore an oath over the last jelly baby which they cut its head off and buried to show what would happen to any of them if one broke the oath.

Chapter 5 – The Snargets Barney finds some boys from the Snarget family playing outside the pit. He tries to get them to leave, but they trick him and catch him. Barney manages to get away and runs to Stig for help. Stig frightens the boys and as they try to escape the youngest falls over. The oldest boys come back and surrender. They give Stig sweets and end up making friends with him and Barney.
